The North Goa club are just a point behind league leaders Sporting Clube de Goa...

Calangute Association continued their superb run in the Goa Professional league as they registered a hard fought 2-0 win over Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao in the match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Calangute were in fantastic form as they were unbeaten in their last 8 matches. They had recently defeated Guardian Angel SC in their last match, while Taleigao are yet to register a win in the league and they have also lost their last four matches.

Calangute coach Valentine Ezeugo made three changes to his side. Skipper Melvin Lobo and Raju Haldankar were back in the team replacing suspended Bonny Niaso and Salim Mohammed. He also gave a first start to Nigerian Yusuf Mohammed. While, Taleigao coach Pascoal Pereira made the same number of changes to the team as striker Jerose Oliveira was back in the starting XI. He also bought in U20 Raju Abbigeri and Manuel Fernandes in place of Salu Santos and Octavio Miranda.

Calangute started the match on an attacking note and created the first chance of the match when the game in the very first minute. Pedro Gonsalves cut past two defenders and entered into the box, but his cross to find well-placed Josley Dias was cleared by Taleigao defender Ramesh Palkar. Pedro was once again in action when he dribbled past two defender and surprised Taleigao keeper Rohan Shaikh with a long ranger, only to see it go wide by few inches.

At the other end, Jerose was brought down by Calangute defender Kouame Joaeph to give away a free-kick just outside the box, but Sherwin Lobo shot wide from the same. A few minutes later Jerose made an excellent run on the right wing and curled the ball into the box to Gopi Gad, but the midfielder failed to put power in his shot which was easily collected by keeper Melroy Fernandes. Once again Jerose was in the action when Sherwin picked him out in the box, but he failed to keep his header on target.

On the half hour mark, Salim cut past two defenders on the halfway line and tried his luck from distance but Taleigao keeper Rohan dived to his right to cancel out his effort.

The latter part of the first session witnessed two quick attacks from Calangute. First, Pedro’s shot from the edge of the box was blocked by Ramesh. The ball rolled to Josley, whose shot was pushed for a corner by keeper Rohan with a diving save. Later, Joaeph sent a perfect pass to Sunny Fernandes in the box, but the striker failed to apply the finishing touch to the ball in a one-on-one situation with keeper Rohan.  After wasting so many opportunities, both the teams entered the dressing room 0-0 at the break.

Just 40 seconds into the second half and referee Prasad Surlakar awarded a penalty to Calangute when he saw Pedro brought down by Guatam Dias in the box. Pedro himself came forward and nicely beat keeper Rohan to open the account for Calangute.

Energized by a goal, Calangute came up with three more attacks on their opponents, but Sunny wasted them all. First, his shot missed the target narrowly from close range. Next his weak shot was effortlessly collected by keeper Rohan. Later he saw his header sail over the crossbar off substitute Agnelo Colaco’s cross from the right.

One more chance came Calangute’s way when Pedro dribbled past three defenders to enter the box but the Taleigao keeper brilliantly blocked him and saved his side from any damage.  However, it was just a matter of three more minutes as Calangute extended their lead through U20 Josley. Agnelo setup a perfect cross to Josley who made no mistake and brilliantly headed the ball into the back of nylons.

The closing stage of the match saw few more beautiful crosses from Agnelo but no one could finalize them. First, skipper Melvin head off the target from 6 yards. Later, Agnelo’s goal-bound shot was pushed for a corner by keeper Rohan. From the resulting corner, Yusuf head wide from point blank range.

The Calangute head coach Valentine said, “We are doing well in the league. We are improving and that’s what I want from my boys. We are now in the race for the title.”
