The Mariners stood tall in the entirety of the game as they did not concede any goal on Sunday afternoon.
Mohun Bagan trounced George Telegraph 4-0 at home in their Calcutta Football League fixture on Sunday afternoon.
It was a stunning header from VP Suhair to open the scoring in the first half, as Salva Chamorro also came up with a brilliant header to double the scoreline. In the second half, both Nongdamba Naorem and Francisco Gonzalez registered their name on the scoresheet to end a dominating display from Kibu Vicuna's men.
5. Has Nongdamba Naorem finally found his goalscoring boots?
The Manipuri youngster is mostly known for his dribbling and trickery, but now under head coach Kibu Vicuna, it looks like the 19-year-old left winger has found his shooting boots and has also developed his decision-making in the final third.
His layoffs to Joseba Beitia and Chamorro were exquisite, to say the least. Naorem broke the offside trap time and again and his controlled and precise runs allowed him to take on defenders at will. He has scored thrice in four matches for Bagan and now looks a more mature as a player.
4. Did losing Joel Sunday early in the game disrupt Ranjan Bhattacharya's tactics?
Both Joel Sunday and Justice Morgan have been the prime sources of goals for George Telegraph. Hence, when Sunday had a collision with Mohun Bagan custodian Debjit Majumder, the Nigerian forward was stretchered off the ground. His absence was felt by Ranjan Bhattacharya and the whole team, as Morgan was running after balls all on his own.
He gave that attacking impetus to the team and lead the line, with Morgan mostly playing off him. However, after his injury, Morgan was left alone upfront with no support and Bhattacharya and his team looked clueless from thereon.
3. Is Salva Chamorro more suited in a double striker formation?
The Spanish forward looked very threatening upfront alongside VP Suhair. Chamorro played the role of a second striker and allowed Suhair space to run in behind the defence of George Telegraph. The 29-year-old also dropped deep to support Beitia and help his team in the overall build-up.
The Spaniard also scored a tremendous header to double the lead in the first half from Gurjinder Kumar's cross. With time, both Suhair and Chamorro are developing a stellar understanding, something which Vicuna will cherish.
2. Are the ground conditions the biggest disappointment in the Calcutta Football League?
Kolkata Maidan has suffered from heavy rainfall during the Calcutta Football League time and again, but this season the conditions have gone from bad to worse. Speaking about the grounds in Maidan, be it Mohammedan Sporting Club Ground or East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Ground, none of them are suitable for playing proper passing football.
Coaches have shown their displeasure at playing on such fields and it is high time that the Indian Football Association (IFA) must take measures to resolove these issues. Players are regularly getting injured on these fields, where a proper end-to-end match is not possible.
1. Are Mohun Bagan finally finding the desired rhythm under Kibu Vicuna?
[KH_RELATED_NEWS title="Related News"][/KH_RELATED_NEWS]It looks like the Mariners have gotten over the disappointment of the Durand Cup final heartbreak and have taken the upcoming challenge head on. Despite the difficult ground conditions and the tricky opposition in Geogre Telegraph, Vicuna's men were unstoppable on the day.
They stamped their authority right from the start and had the stronger foothold throughout the game. They did not allow George Telegraph to settle. The Bagan defence looks a lot more solid and the understanding in passing and build-up play proves that the Mariners are ready to set sail for the rest of the season.
