Mohammedan Sporting forced to stalemate against George Telegraph
The Black Panthers are still hoping to land a top-three finish in the league.
Mohammedan Sporting Club missed a chance to go on second position of the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ log after a goalless draw with George Telegraph at Mohammedan Sporting Ground on Friday.
The Black Panthers went into the match in fifth position on 6 points, four behind leaders Mohun Bagan. Technical Director Raghu Nandi would’ve fancied the chances of his team getting the better of George Telegraph but were unable to find the back of the net.
Mohammedan SC dominated proceedings and created better goal-scoring chances in front of their home fans but Nandi’s team were let down by their final pass and finishing. They will surely be kicking themselves for not burying numerous goal-scoring opportunities they created, especially in the second-half.
The Black Panthers gave a good account of themselves in the opening minutes of the game, and should have easily went into the half-time break two or three goals up.
The first real chance of the evening went to Mohammedan SC in the 4th minute, but Dipendu Dowary fired his left-footed effort wide of Laltu Mondal’s goal.
Princewill Emeka should have done better five minutes later after a well-worked move by Satyam Sharma and Prosenjit Chakraborty, but the Nigerian striker was denied by Laltu from close range.
Princewill found himself alone with the goalkeeper minutes later, but he shot straight at on rushing Laltu, who made himself big to make a fine block.
Mohammedan SC continued to show plenty of purpose in attack, as George Telegraph sat back and tried to catch them on the counter, but in the end, both teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

The Black Panthers came out strong in the second-half and had the first real chance on goal in the 53rd minute with Rakesh Karmakar trying his luck from outside the box, but Laltu produced a great save to deny him.
In the 67th minute substitute Mohammad Amirul came close to scoring when he met a Dipendu Dowary corner-kick, but he headed inches over from close range.
Princewill had further chances without really troubling the George Telegraph defense, and it was the visitors who nearly sneaked through when Stephan Harry got an effort on target, but Priyant Singh made a good save.
George Telegraph were also clever throughout, using delaying tactics such as players going down for cramps to ensure the match was of a stop-start nature and prevent Mohammedan SC from finding their rhythm on attack.

Raghu Nandi will have to think long and hard about his striking options going forward if he hopes to push the likes of Peerless SC and Aryan Club for a top three finish.
