The Goan football season began with a Charity Cup match on Friday, where Dempo Sports Club managed to overcome a stiff challenge from Sporting Clube de Goa. Dempo won 4-2 after a penalty shoot-out in the game that was held at the Duler Stadium. Both sides failed to capitalise on their chances in the regular time.
Dempo 'keeper Dylan D’Silva came up with two brilliant saves in the shoot-out, while Suraj Hadkonkar, Ariston Costa, Edwin Viegas and Pedro Gonsalves were on the target for their side. On the other hand, Marcus Mascarenhas and Liston Cardozo managed to convert for the Flaming Oranje.

The match which started with a drab play witnessed the first opportunity of the match in the 8th minute when Sporting’s Dattaraj Gaonkar tried his luck from the top of the box, only to see it miss by few inches. The Golden Eagles took another eight minutes to reply to their opponents. They were awarded a free-kick and skipper Kirtikesh Gadekar sent the ball to Edwin in the box. However, the lad failed to keep his header on target from close range. They had another chance in the 19th minute when Vieri Colaco smoothly cut past two Sporting defenders to enter the box but his goalbound strike deflected off another defender and went out for a corner.
At the other end, Sporting had another opportunity to take the lead in the 40th minute as their winger Stendly Fernandes sent a corner to Alton Vaz, whose header was brilliantly blocked by Dempo keeper Dylan. The Flaming Oranje should have taken the lead in the dying minutes of the session when Vallmicky Miranda found Rohit Totad but the latter flicked the ball over the crossbar with the just rival 'keeper in front of him.

Just like in the first half, Sporting were the dominant side from the start of the second session as they came close to scoring on numerous occasions. Rohit found Alton from the well-taken corner but the Sporting lad saw his powerful strike deflect off Dempo’s Desmon Pereira and go out for a corner.
They had the best chance to surge ahead at the hour mark when Liston Cardozo made a defence-splitting through pass to Lloyd Cardozo. However, his goal-bound strike was beautifully blocked by Dempo keeper Dylan.
The Golden Eagles also had a chance to seal the deal in the last few minutes of the match when Desmon made a through pass to Richard Cardoz, whose strike was brilliantly pushed away by Sporting custodian Ozen Silva. The match later moved to the shoot-out.
