The 22nd edition of the quadrennial event will be the first one to happen in the months of November and December.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sung praises about the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts, Qatar, as he feels that hosting the event in November and December will be beneficial for players and the tournament as a whole.

“Technically, it will be an amazing championship since the players will reach the tournament at their best physical and technical levels because of its timing”, Infantino said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“This will be better than going into the tournament after a hard season when it takes place in the summer. The tournament match will all be in within 70 km which is also a positive.”

The FIFA President is certain that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be a pathbreaking experience for the sport and the fans will come out in numbers to support their teams. “I am pretty sure that this will be a great experience for the fans as well as it takes only 5-6 hours to travel to Qatar from Europe,” he added.

In his interview with the Italian publication, he was quizzed about the future of the World Cup with rumours of participating teams increasing to 48 from 2026. To which Infantino said, “World Cup is the peoples’ championship, and in Russia, there was no Italy, not even the Netherlands, the United States, Chile or Cameroon. He added that his responsibility is to open the World Cup and make it more engaged.”

He also addressed the racism that is going around in stadiums, as he said, “It something we must not hide, we must condemn it in all its forms and we must act concretely. I thank the President of the Italian Football Association Gabriele Gravina for moving forward with new rules and sanctions.

Lastly, he spoke about the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology and stated referees as ‘heroes’ considering their difficulty in work and feels that if the technology can assist them tangibly then it is beautiful for the sport.
