Re-capping the past meetings between India and Bangladesh

The Blue Tigers will play the Bengal Tigers on Monday.

The Indian national football team are back in competitive action. They already faced Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers and up next are matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. India will play Bangladesh on Monday, June 7.

Both teams have played each other a lot of times due to their proximity. The last meeting between the two was eventful, but did not have a winner. With both teams set to renew their rivalry in the coming days, each will play for bragging rights, as qualification to the blockbuster event in Qatar is out of the question. 

Shifting focus to the past meetings between India and Bangladesh, here is the head-to-head record and a brief look at their last five match-ups:

Head-to-Head

India and Bangladesh have played 29 games against each other in the past. Out of those, India have won 15, while Bangladesh have won only two. The remaining 12 matches have ended in stalemates, including the last three meetings.

Last Five Meetings

The last five meetings between the two teams have seen India win two and the rest ending in draws. Bangladesh have been impressive against their relatively stronger neighbours and tend to be extra motivated when facing them. Judging by the trend, something special will be needed to separate the two outfits when they face-off again on Monday.

India 1 - 0 Bangladesh (August 20, 2007)

India and Bangladesh played each other during the 13th Nehru Cup hosted by the former after a 10-year gap. Teams like Syria, Kyrgyzstan, and Cambodia were the others that participated in the tournament. Ambedkar Stadium played host to the game, that saw Indian skipper Bhaichung Bhutia score the solitary goal in the fifth minute of the match. 

Bangladesh 0 - 1 India (December 11, 2009)

The next match between the two took place during the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championships 2009. Bangladesh were the hosts of the tournament after India withdrew. The neighbours clashed in the semi-final after navigating through the group stages smoothly. India yet again pipped Bangladeshis by a single goal. Sushil Kumar Singh was the scorer this time and the Indians later went on to win the title.

Bangladesh 1 - 1 India (September 3, 2013)

The SAFF Championships 2013 saw these two face each other again. Nepal played hosts this time around. Both India and Bangladesh were in the same group and the clash between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw. While Atiqur Rahman Meshu scored for the Bengal Tigers, Sunil Chhetri scored for the Blue Tigers.

India 2 - 2 Bangladesh (March 5, 2014)

The next meeting was during an international friendly back in 2014. India played hosts to Bangladesh at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. The entertaining contest ended in a 2 - 2 draw, where the hosts scored three goals on the night. Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri scored a brace, including a late equalizer, after Arnab Mondal gave away the lead with an own-goal. Mithun Chowdhury scored  for the visitors and Subrata Paul collected a second yellow card in the dying minutes. 

India 1 - 1 Bangladesh (October 15, 2019)

The last time both teams met was during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers. India and Bangladesh are joined by heavyweights Qatar, Oman, and Afghanistan in Group E of the second round of the qualifiers. The Blue Tigers delivered a disappointing performance after securing an iconic point against Qatar before this game. Mohammad Saad Uddin scored the opener and almost guided the team to a win, before Adil Khan scored a late equalizer for Igor Stimac’s men.
