The Golden Eagles wasted an opportunity to go three points clear at the top of the table..

A goal from Josley Dias helped Calangute Association to register a win over Dempo Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.

Calangute coach Valentine Euzego made two changes in the midfield as Pedro Gonsalves and Nigerian Kouame M Bra Joaeph Yao found their names in the starting XI, While the Dempo coach Mauricio Afonso Dempo chose to field the same team which helped him to get full points against SCC Cavelossim in the last match.

The match started with both teams trying to attack in every possible move but Calangute were more efficient in that and took an early lead when U-20 Josley’s shot from the edge of the box finished in the net, with Dempo keeper Priyant Singh helpless. A goal down in the game after only 12 minutes, Dempo regrouped and tried to put pressure on Calangute’s defense when Kapil Hoble’s header went over the crossbar after receiving a perfect cross from Joaquim Abranches.

While Nickson Castanha’s direct free-kick also went wide. At the other end, Calangute’s Salim Mohammad tried his luck from distance but failed to keep his shot on target. While Dempo continued to pressure their opponents and found one more chance to equalize. But Calangute keeper Melroy Fernandes came up with a diving save to deny Beevan D’Mello from scoring. They again wasted one more glorious chance to put the terms on level terms when Nigerian Felix Odili Chidi dribbled past two defenders in the box, but failed to put power in his shot which went directly into the gloves of keeper Melroy.

Two minutes into the second half and Coach Afonso came up with two back to back substitutions as Gabriel Fernandes and Germanpreet Singh came on to strengthen their midfield.

With both teams playing possession football, the game was restricted to the midfield for the first 30 minutes of the second session. However, the Golden Eagles tried hard to find an equalizer but Calangute’s defenders and keeper Melroy stayed strong and cleared every possible chance of conceding.

Just five minutes before the final whistle, Dempo’s another golden opportunity for an equalizer went begging when Adil Khan’s smart header was equally well pushed for a corner by Calangute keeper Melroy, off Gabriel Fernandes’ corner.

At the end of regular time the fourth official showed six minutes of added time, giving Dempo some more opportunity to find the equalizer. But Calangute’s back four and the goalkeeper made no mistake and helped their side to grab full points from the nail-biting encounter.

With today’s win, Calangute moved to 6th place with 12 points from 8 matches, while Dempo remain 2nd in the league with 19 points from 10 matches.
