Five teams with the most UEFA Champions League final appearances
Iconic European clubs lead the way in reaching the most number of finals.
The UEFA Champions League is one of the biggest club competitions in the world. It is the biggest ambition for several European clubs. Qualifying itself for the competition takes a huge effort. One has to either win their domestic league, place in top positions, win a trophy or go through rigorous qualifying fixtures to simply enter it.
However, some elite clubs from Europe have made it a tradition to perform well in the UCL. These clubs are historically massive and very successful. Reaching the final of the competition is beyond any fluke, it takes proper consistent effort. The 2021-22 season of the UCL will see Real Madrid and Liverpool FC clash for the trophy.
These two outfits last met in a final back during the 2017-18 season where the La Liga giants secured the win. Both of the teams are historically great and rank in the top five teams to make most finals. On that note, here are the five teams with the most number of final appearances in the Champions League:
5. FC Barcelona - 8 finals
FC Barcelona has reached the final of the UEFA Champions League on eight occasions. The La Liga outfit has won five of those eight finals, becoming the fifth most successful club in the competition. It is also the fifth club to win five or more UCL titles.
The last time they won the UCL was during the 2014-15 edition. Former manager Luis Enrique led the team to the UCL glory by beating Juventus FC in the final.
4. Juventus FC - 9 finals
Juventus FC is Italy’s most successful club in terms of Serie A wins. But, the club is heavily unfortunate when it comes to the UEFA Champions League. Despite making it to nine finals, the Old Lady has won only two UCL trophies, which is surprising for a club of its stature.
Furthermore, the last time Juventus won the UCL was way back in 1995-96. The gap of almost 27 years looks unfavourable to their reputation as a European force.
3. Liverpool FC - 10 finals
Liverpool is England’s most successful club in Europe, by a distance. The club has reached its third final in five years after beating Villarreal in the 2021-22 edition semi-final. This is LFC’s 10th final appearance in the UCL.
In terms of winning the European championship, Liverpool has six trophies in its locker. Their last win was in 2018-19 after the club met Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
2. AC Milan & FC Bayern Munich - 11 finals
There are two teams tied in second place with 11 final appearances. One is AC Milan, which is the second most successful club in the UCL. The Serie A giants have seven Champions League wins and their final appearance was way back in 2006-07 when they also won the title.
The second team with 11 final appearances in the UCL is FC Bayern Munich. The German Bundesliga powerhouse has six Champions League win in its history. Winning the European trophy is the main objective of the club every season. Their last final appearance came during the 2019-20 edition when they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
1. Real Madrid - 16 finals
Real Madrid is the outright leader when it comes to UEFA Champions League success. The club has made it to 16 finals, the most. Moreover, the Los Blancos have 13 titles to its name, which is also a record. In fact, no other club has UCL titles in double digits.
By reaching the final of the 2021-22 edition, Real Madrid has reached the final for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign. That was also the season when the club won a third consecutive UCL title by beating Liverpool FC in the final.
