Mumbai City FC head coach Alexandre Guimaraes’ joy knew no bounds after a thumping 5-0 win against Kerala Blasters FC in the 2016 Hero Indian Super League on Saturday evening. Playing in front of home fans at the Mumbai Football Arena, Diego Forlan scored the first hat-trick of the season to inspire Mumbai’s rise to the summit of the table with 19 points from 12 games. “I think today the players got rewarded for playing well and it was just a matter of time [before Mumbai scored heavily], but we still have two more games to go,” 57-year-old Guimaraes told reporters after the match. In one of the brilliant moves, Guimaraes started with 20-year-old Brazilian midfielder Cafu and the youngster impressed one and all with his great control before going on to score the hosts’ fourth goal of the night. Guimaraes discussed Cafu’s performance and the team’s at large. “We thought today it was important to have one player in midfield who could control the ball well and handle any situation,” the Costa Rican said. “Today our approach was different offensively and we created many chances and as I have said before we just had to be patient and it was a better performance and we have got the result today.” Guimaraes also sang marquee man Forlan’s praises. “Fantastic [performance from Forlan] I think and he is playing better and he is a guy who has come here to win, and it was also important for him to have a night like this,” he said. Mumbai now host defending champions Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday in what will be their second meeting with the Super Machans this season after a 1-1 draw in Chennai early this month.
