If the Premier League is one of the most popular football leagues in the world, then the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is one of the most popular fantasy leagues in the world. The concept of a fantasy league is simple where users choose players from all teams under a budget and they score points in accordance to their real-life performance on the pitch. Some players are popular picks due to their prowess in front of the goal and creative output.
It is no surprise that attacking players cost more than the defenders due to their tendency of scoring more points for the users. The Fantasy Premier League began way back in 2002-03 and it has grown in popularity with every passing season.
Over the past 20 editions, many legendary players became top point getters in a particular season. Here is a look at all the top FPL point getters in each season since the inception of the game:
2002-03: Thierry Henry (271 points)
The inaugural season of the Fantasy Premier League saw Theirry Henry outscore everyone with 271 points. Playing for Arsenal, the legendary striker scored 24 goals and returned 20 assists, which is also a record for assists in a single PL season.
2003-04: Thierry Henry (242 points)
The second FPL season ever saw Thierry Henry become the top scorer again with 242 points. On his way to winning the golden boot, he scored 30 goals for Arsenal and also made six assists. Arsenal won the league that season.
2004-05: Frank Lampard (269 points)
The 2004-05 season of the Premier League saw Chelsea winning it and FPL saw Frank Lampard finish as the top points scorer. A midfielder by trade, Lampard was a prolific goalscorer and got 13 goals with 18 assists to end up with 269 FPL points.
2005-06: Thierry Henry (239 points)
Theirry Henry was back on the throne with 239 FPL points during the 2005-06 season. He won the golden boot with 27 goals and eight assists for the Gunners. However, the Blues were the PL winners despite Henry’s individual brilliance.
2006-07: Cristiano Ronaldo (244 points)
The 2006-07 season saw Cristiano Ronaldo truly turn into the world-class player that he is today. Despite playing as a winger for Manchester United, he got 244 points after scoring 17 goals and eight assists, helping MUFC to the PL title.
2007-08: Cristiano Ronaldo (283 points)
Cristiano Ronaldo was the top scorer in FPL with 283 points for the second time in a row and also took Manchester United to a successive PL title win during the 2007-08 season. The Portuguese sensation scored 31 goals and six assists, securing the golden boot and the Ballon d’Or.
2008-09: Frank Lampard (226 points)
Frank Lampard became the top FPL points scorer during the 2008-09 season with 226 points. With an attacking output of 12 goals and 10 assists, he was key in Chelsea finishing in third place on the table.
2009-10: Frank Lampard (284 points)
The 2009-10 season of the PL saw Frank Lampard score a magnificent 284 FPL points, a record back then. He was hailed as the best midfielder in the world during that season when the Englishman got 22 goals and 14 assists in 36 games.
2010-11: Luis Nani (198 points)
Luis Nani became the FPL top points scorer in the 2010-11 season with 198 points. This remains the only occasion when the leading FPL player managed less than 200 points. He had nine goals and 14 assists in that campaign.
2011-12: Robin Van Persie (269 points)
Robin Van Persie took the 2011-12 season by the scruff of the neck and got 269 FPL points. During the campaign, the forward got 30 goals and returned 13 assists in 38 games, also adding 45 bonus points to his overall tally.
2012-13: Robin Van Persie (262 points)
Robin Van Persie retained his title as the highest FPL points scorer during the 2012-13 season. He got 262 points while playing for Manchester United, scoring 26 goals and 15 assists. The total also had 49 bonus points.
2013-14: Luis Suarez (295 points)
During the 2013-14 season of the PL, Luis Suarez broke the previous record and set a new one with 295 points in a single campaign. Playing for Liverpool, the striker scored 31 goals and made 25 assists. His total also had 40 bonus points.
2014-2015: Eden Hazard (233 points)
Eden Hazard was in fabulous form for Chelsea FC during the 2014-15 season. The Belgian helped the Blues win the PL by contributing with 14 goals and 10 assists in 38 matches under Jose Mourinho.
2015-2016: Riyad Mahrez (240 points)
The 2015-16 season of the Premier League was iconic for many reasons. Leicester City won the league against all odds, thanks to key contributions from players like Jamie Vardy, Ngolo Kante and Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian became the first African player to finish as the leading FPL point scorer at the end of a season with 240 points, scoring 17 goals and 11 assists.
2016-2017: Alexis Sanchez (264 points)
Alexis Sanchez scored 264 points in the FPL during the 2016-17 season while playing for Arsenal. The attacker from Chile was sensational in his performances as he got 24 goals and 11 assists for the Gunners.
2017-2018: Mohamed Salah (303 points)
Mohamed Salah became the first player in FPL history to score more than 300 points. During the 2017-18 season, the Liverpool attacker scored 303 points which saw him get 32 goals and 12 assists. Even to this day, no other player apart from Salah has breached the 300 mark.
2018-2019: Mohamed Salah (259 points)
Mohamed Salah carried his form and became the top FPL points scorer in the 2018-19 season too. This time, he got 259 points while playing for the Reds. His 22 goals and 12 assists were not enough as LFC came second in the league table with a difference of one point from Manchester City.
2019-2020: Kevin De Bruyne (251 points)
Liverpool finally won the league with 99 points but Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne was the leading FPL points scorer in 2019-20. He scored 251 points for his FPL users and where the midfielder contributed with 13 goals and registered 23 assists for MCFC.
2020-2021: Bruno Fernandes (244 points)
Bruno Fernandes arrived in the Premier League and immediately took it by storm. He became the leading FPL points scorer during the 2020-21 season after obtaining 244 points while playing for Manchester United. He managed 18 goals and registered 14 assists for the Red Devils during that year.
2021-2022: Mohamed Salah (265 points)
Mohamed Salah finished with 265 points last year, the highest tally in the FPL. While Liverpool could not win the league, Salah shared the golden boot with Son Heung-Min after scoring 23 goals and also making 14 assists.
