The Mariners are in a celebratory mood after securing the league title and being handed the silverware on Sunday.

Mohun Bagan were handed the I-League trophy at a Kolkata hotel after the century-old club won the most recent edition of the league. The 2019-20 season was dominated by the Kolkata-based club, which now will be their final-ever appearance in the competition. To the delight of Mohun Bagan as a club, its officials and fans alike, none other than the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate the club on their achievement.

The PM lauded the club’s efforts in winning the I-League, which is certainly the cherry on top for everyone involved in the club's recent success.

Narendra Modi, who is a vocal advocate of the role that sports play in the progress of the people of the nation wrote in his tweet, “Congratulations to the players, staff and fans of the illustrious Mohun Bagan for emerging as I-League Champions! Indeed, a joyful occasion. #Champion5”

Mohun Bagan won the I-League 2019-20 by finishing at the top of the points table after securing 39 points, 16 more than second-placed arch-rivals East Bengal. It will be interesting to see if Mohun Bagan, who have now merged with the current Indian Super League champions ATK, will repeat their title-winning feat in the ISL 2020-21 season. They will renew their decade-old rivalry with East Bengal in the cash-rich league since the Red and Gold have also secured an entry into the top tier after new investors took over the ownership of the club recently.
