The former Mohun Bagan coach will work closely with Mohammedan boss Jose Hevia in the 2020-21 I-League.

Mohammedan Sporting Club have appointed former Mohun Bagan coach Sankarlal Chakraborty as the club’s new Technical Director. Chakraborty will work with head coach Jose Hevia to integrate their coaching philosophies.

It was previously reported that Chakraborty was in talks with the Black Panthers over a possible role within the club’s technical ranks, and after negotiations had dragged on for some time, the former defender's appointment has finally been confirmed by Football Secretary Dipendu Biswas on Friday after consulting with General Secretary Sk. Wasim Akram.

"When I got to the club, I met Wasim (Akram) and Dipendu (Biswas). When I heard their ambition, I must say that I was really interested because it is an exciting challenge. They want so much for this club. It's a challenge and I like challenges. I hope to contribute to the success of Mohammedan Sporting Club." Chakraborty said.

"Football is about teamwork. I am really looking forward to working with coach Jose Hevia. I am going to support him with my knowledge and experience," he added.

Mohammedan SC, meanwhile are all set to take part in the upcoming 2020-21 I-League which will begin on January 9, 2020. They gained entry into the league by winning the I-League Qualifiers in October and will lock horns with Sudeva FC in the opening match.

They have also made a host of new signings already, such as Philip Adjah, Mohamed Fatau and Jamal Bhuyan among others. Bhuyan, who is also the captain of the Bangladesh national team arrived at Kolkata on Friday to join his team after agreeing terms on a season-long deal with them last month.

The Black Panthers are regarded as one of the favourites to win the I-League, after having reached the semi-finals of the IFA Shield earlier this month. They beat Gokulam Kerala FC in the quarter-final, before losing to eventual winners Real Kashmir FC in the last-four.
