The tactician is the first Bhutanese to join the helm of a club in the competition's history.
I-League's newest entrants Sudeva FC have named Chencho Dorji as their head coach for the upcoming edition. With this appointment, Dorji becomes the first Bhutanese coach at the helm of any club in the history of the I-League.
In a formal announcement made on social media, the President of the club, Anuj Gupta, lauded his qualities and said, “Chencho believes in creating a system that produces everlasting players. His patience and farsightedness will help our players to go far." Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Vijay Hakari also added his opinion on the appointment, “We are elated to announce Chencho as our head coach, not only because of his coaching conduct but also for his alignment with Sudeva's ethos."
Dorji has previously worked at the Bhutan Football Federation for 12 years and has also had a brief stint at Manipur-based club FC Imphal City. The new coach felt honoured on his appointment and expressed himself by saying, “It is a great honour to be part of the I-League. I really thank the President and the Vice-President for believing in me and deciding to give the huge responsibility. If you do well, you will survive and I am very excited and optimistic about this challenge.”
“As every head coach, I also want to win. I want to win all the matches, but that does not happen in football. Sometimes, we lose the match even after playing a good game. We must be ready to handle such a situation wisely. This is our first season and we want to be in the best position on the table at the end of the season,” he replied, when questioned about the challenges ahead of the club’s debut campaign in the I-League as reported by BBT.
