I-League Team of the Round 10
With over half the season completed, the Northeast clubs are making their mark at the top of the table...
It was another fascinating week of action in the I-League as the clubs from the Northeast asserted their dominance in the league, while there were mixed fortunes for the two Kolkata clubs.
Games berween Shillong and Chennai as well as Churchill and Minerva witnessed goal-fests. East Bengal dropped more points as arch-rivals Mohun Bagan closed the gap at the top.
In the weekend's first game Mohun Bagan trounced DSK Shivajians 3-1 thanks to a Balwant Singh brace. Milan Singh gave the visitors the lead just after the half hour mark but Bagan hit back through two Balwant goals before half-time. Katsumi Yusa then sealed the win with a goal five minutes before regulation time. The three points see Bagan join East Bengal at the top of the standings. Both teams are now seperated by just goal difference and the Mariners have a game in hand.
In Saturday's other game Mumbai and Bengaluru played out a goalless draw which was dominated by the visitors. This is their second successive golless home draw draw for the Mumbaikars.
The two games on Sunday saw a total of of 14 goals. Shillong Lajong continued their upward curve as they registedered their first away win of the season. Fabio Nevas, Isaac Vanmalsawmfela , Bipin Singh and Asier Dipanda Dicka all scored fo Lajong, while Haroon Amiri got a consolatation for the southern outfit.
Goa saw a 9-goal thriller with Minerva emerging 4-5 winners. This is Minerva's second success of the campaign, while Churchill have just one win in 10 games.
In the single game on Monday Aizawl continued their fine form as they edged out leaders East Bengal 1-0. Laldanmawia Ralte scored the only goal of the game in the second half.
East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are now level on points at the top on 21 points while Aizawl are only a point brehind on 20 points. Lajong are fourth on 18 and Benngaluru make up the top five. Minerva are the big movers in the bottom half of the table joining DSK Shivajians on 10 points.
