Iker Casillas mocks Spanish media with tweets on his sexuality
The former Real Madrid goalkeeper took to the social micro-blogging platform to squash rumours of him dating an actress.
Iker Casillas mocks the Spanish media for constantly talking about his relationships with women. The Spanish and Real Madrid legend was reported to be dating Spanish actress Alejandra Onieva. So, as a response to the rumours on his sexuality and relationships, he recently announced his homosexuality via Twitter, writing, "I hope you respect me: I'm gay." He revealed his orientation in a single tweet just weeks after he divorced his wife.
The World Cup winner, who played 725 times for Real Madrid and won five La Liga and three Champions League titles, is one of the most prominent football players and is always in the news. After tweeting, he asked for 'respect' from his followers mocking the media.
Many fans flooded his tweets with congratulations, love, and support, and his Spain teammate Carles Puyol, who's said to be in the know of the joke of Casillas, responded with "It's time to tell our story, Iker," with a heart and kiss emoji.
Casillas, on the other hand, only posted them on Twitter, not Instagram or Facebook.
As for what we really know about his dating life, Iker Casillas split with his wife in March 2021 after they both chose different paths in their lives.
However, he was rumoured to be dating famous singer Shakira months before after following her on Instagram, which stimulated the speculation, but the goalkeeper rebuffed those claims.
Casillas had recently finalised his divorce from ex-wife Sara Carbonero, a Spanish sports journalist.
Casillas, who had to quit football after a heart-attack, posted an emotional Instagram post after divorcing his wife: “Both Sara and I feel enormously proud of the family we are and of having shared a love that has filled us with happiness during all our years together.
“Today our love as a couple takes different but not distant paths since we’ll continue together in the marvellous task of continuing to be devoted parents as we have been up until now.
“This is a well-considered decision which we have taken through mutual agreement.”
The 41-year-old, father to Martin, nine, and Lucas, six, with Sara, added: “The respect, affection and friendship will remain for ever.
UPDATE: Iker Casillas has revealed that his Twitter account was hacked and that the tweet was not something he wanted to put out.
