Sergio Lobera was happy with his side’s performance in the AFC Cup.
Odisha FC’s AFC Cup 2023 campaign ended with a goalless draw against the Central Coast Mariners FC at the Kalinga Stadium on Thursday.
The Mariners emerged victorious in the first leg of the inter-zonal semi-final with a 4-0 win, securing their qualification for the next round of the tournament. Despite showcasing commendable resilience in the second game, Odisha failed to score and secure a victory against their opponents.
The post-match press conference was attended by Odisha FC’s head coach Sergio Lobera, who looked quite satisfied with his team’s performance in the match.
Let’s take a look at the excerpts.
Take on the match
Sergio Lobera had a very positive approach towards today’s against the Mariners at their home ground and also appreciated his players. Lobera stated, “I am very proud of my players. Two players played during Ramadan. They played without food or any drinks. Still, they competed very well.”
“Yes, we are a bit unhappy because our campaign in the AFC Cup ends here but my players showed character throughout the tournament”, Sergio added.
About the AFC Cup campaign
Odisha FC had a remarkable stint in the 2023 AFC Cup. They defeated some top clubs to reach this place. The Odisha Boss Sergio Lobera also stated this is an achievement for the club and India.
“It wasn’t easy to make a comeback in the group stage when you have Mohun Bagan, Bashundhara Kings, and Maziya and end up at the top of the table. Then we competed against Central Coast Mariners who won the A-League last season. So, we need to be happy with what we have achieved,” Sergio stated.
Personal satisfaction as a coach
Sergio Lobera’s impact on Odisha’s performance this season is noteworthy. His leadership has contributed significantly to the club’s continuous development and the enhancement of the players’ skills and performances.
When asked to state a few words regarding his personal experience from the AFC Cup, Lobera replied, “I’m very happy with this experience and proud to be a part of this club and the family. I know, we are a bit sad about not qualifying for the next round but people in India should be proud of Odisha FC. We tried our level best and represented India at this level,” Lobera added.
