AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers updated points table: India top Group D to qualify for continental showpiece

India secured their AFC U17 Asian Cup qualification by winning the group decider match against Iran.

The India U17 team pulled off a historic comeback against Iran to script an almost miraculous victory at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad. With this win, India have booked their ticket to the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The Blue Colts were coming on the back of a 2-0 loss against Lebanon, and a positive result against Iran looked like a far-fetched proposition. Iran’s opening goal in the 19th minute made the task more arduous, but the hosts found the inspiration in front of the home crowd to equalise and then take a victorious lead.

India top Group D

The Blue Colts required a win against Iran in the last match to finish as table toppers in Group D. Only two teams, India and Iran, were in the running for a spot in the AFC U17 Asian Cup as the final matchday of the qualifiers approached.

A 2-1 win on Sunday has helped the Blue Colts earn three more points to take their tally to 7. Iran already had 7 points, and they will remain on 7 points. The hosts have an edge over Iran due to their higher points in head-to-head matches, which have taken them to the top of Group D.

Lebanon, Palestine, and Chinese Taipei bow out

Lebanon had a positive campaign in the AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, but they will miss out on qualification for the AFC U17 Asian Cup by a narrow margin. Lebanon defeated India, the table toppers in Group D, and the second-placed Iran, but failed to win against Palestine and Chinese Taipei.

Points dropped against Palestine, and Chinese Taipei cost Lebanon a qualification spot as they finished in third position with 6 points. Palestine finished in fourth place with five points to their name. The bottom place is occupied by Chinese Taipei, which could earn only one point in five matches.
