AIFF’s new rules promise fair play in Indian Football.
All India Football Federation (AIFF) is ramping up its efforts to promote fair play and sportsmanship on the pitch. Following a recent FIFA circular, the AIFF’s Refereeing Department will enforce a stricter “Code of Conduct – Participant Behaviour” across all major tournaments in the upcoming season.
This move aims to ensure a professional, respectful, and fair sporting environment for players, coaches, officials, and fans. The code outlines expected behavior on and off the field. Players are expected to maintain discipline, respect referees’ decisions, and avoid dissent.
This code will apply to competitions like the Durand Cup, I-League, I-League 2, Super Cup, and Indian Super League (ISL). The stricter enforcement aims to curb unruly behavior and create a more disciplined atmosphere for players and referees throughout the season.
The AIFF’s decision to enforce a stricter code of conduct comes amidst rising concerns about player misconduct, on-field brawls, and unruly fan behavior. These incidents not only tarnish the image of the sport but also create a hostile environment for everyone involved.
Stern rules promote sportsmanship and respect by curbing dissent. Clear communication and efficient gameplay improve as a result. Additionally, fair play and player safety are enhanced with consistent enforcement. These guidelines aim to foster a more respectful and disciplined environment for players and referees alike.
Let us now examine the specific regulations implemented during the upcoming season.
Captain’s role
The captain acts as the bridge between the team and the referee. Only the captain can respectfully approach the referee to seek clarification on calls, while any other player doing so risks a caution for dissent. This rule helps to prevent a swarm of players surrounding the referee, which can be intimidating and hinder the flow of the game
Technical area
Only authorized senior members of the technical staff occupying the designated technical area are permitted to respectfully request explanations from the fourth official regarding officiating decisions. Any player who seeks an explanation from the referee or fourth official will be subjected to dissent.
Technical area Conduct
To maintain order on the sidelines and prevent distractions during gameplay, only one member of the technical staff can stand and actively coach players. Other technical staff members, such as doctors or physiotherapists, may only stand when attending to essential duties related to player health, safety and well-being.
Dissent
To ensure a fair and respectful playing environment, persistent challenges to a match official’s decisions, whether through verbal or physical means, will result in a caution or dismissal from the field.
