OCA removes participation limits for football events at 2026 Asian Games

OCA reverses proposed limits after objections from member association
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has removed participation restrictions for the football tournaments at the Asian Games 2026, allowing all national associations to register teams for both the men’s and women’s competitions.
The decision reverses an earlier proposal that aimed to limit the tournament to 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams based on rankings in competitions organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The age bracket of U23 in men’s event still remains.
The proposal had faced objections from at least one member association over the restrictive qualification criteria, pressuring the OCA to withdraw the limits.
The development now clears the way for India to field teams in both events with the men’s U23 team and women’s senior team, participation that had earlier appeared uncertain under the proposed restrictions by OCA.
However, the situation is not entirely so simple, as India’s men’s and women’s football teams could still miss out on the Asian Games despite the rule change.
Key details behind OCA’s decision to remove participation limits

Several important factors influenced the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) decision to scrap the proposed participation restrictions for football at the 2026 Asian Games.
The initial proposal, supported by the Japanese Olympic Committee, meant to limit participation in the football tournaments.
The men’s competition was set to feature only the top 16 teams based on results from the AFC U23 Asian Cup, while the women’s event would include 12 teams determined by their participation in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
Under this system, India’s U23 men’s team would not have been eligible as they did not qualify for the U23 AFC Asian Cup, although the women’s team would have remained eligible after taking part in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 recently.
The proposed restrictions faced objections from member associations, and with the possibility of some teams withdrawing, the OCA reconsidered the plan.
The governing body ultimately opted to remove the limits to ensure wider participation across Asia.
With the restrictions now lifted, all national associations are free to register teams for the football tournaments at the Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
However, the final decision of fielding the team still remains with the Olympic Association of the countries.
Indian football teams’ participation still in danger due to Sports Ministry’s qualification criteria

Even though the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has opened the football tournaments at the Asian Games 2026 to all member associations, India’s participation in football remains uncertain.
Reports suggest that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is likely to follow the eligibility guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports before approving the contingent for the event in Japan.
Under the ministry’s selection policy, individual athletes must be ranked within the top six in Asia, while teams need to be placed among the top eight in continental rankings to receive clearance for multi-sport events.
And India’s men’s football team is ranked 27th in Asia, while the women’s football team is ranked 12th in Asia making both the teams ineligible according to the guidelines set by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports India.
The ministry’s guidelines further emphasize that athletes and teams should have a genuine medal prospect in order to be approved for continental competitions.
As things stand, these guidelines could prevent India’s men’s and women’s football teams from travelling to the Asian Games despite the OCA removing participation restrictions.
