East Bengal's record in Durand Cup quarter finals over years

Red & Gold will play against the Indian Army on 16th August.

East Bengal FC are all set to battle it out against Indian Army in their quarterfinal game of the 135th edition of the Durand Cup and will be looking to dominate the game with a good display of football. The match is scheduled to kick off on Sunday, 16th August 2026 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) at 19:00 IST with both sides eager to get the spot for the semifinal.

The Red & Gold Brigade have a notable and a long history in the Durand’s quarter finals as they featured first in 1951 against Kalighat to play for the crest and win the prestigious title for the first time.

According to the available records, East Bengal FC have played around 38 Durand Cup quarterfinal games, recording 23 wins and 7 draws under their belt while losing 8 games.

And now as the Moshal Brigade are set to lock horns in another great quarterfinal clash at home, the stage is set for the ISL champions, who just got a commanding win over Al-Arabi SC in their ACL Two Preliminary Round game.

East Bengal FC have enjoyed enough quarterfinal matchups as they have played over 38 games according to the available records, the records for several seasons aren’t there, but in those 45 fixtures, they have clinched 23 victories, which indicates the promise the team showed in Indian football, and that’s why they have the second most Durand Cup titles after their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.

They recorded their first win in 1951 when they defeated Kalighat and won the title after beating Rajasthan Club with a scoreline of 2-1.

Following their strong run of form in 1952, they beat Eastern India Railway and again won the trophy for the second time went to beat Hyderabad City Police.

After advancing with two back-to-back titles in 1953, they had the upper hand against National Defence Academy, Caltex Club in 1956 and Madras Regimental Centre in 1960.

And talking about 1956 and 1960, the Torchbearers again pulled off the impossible as they confirmed the title after dominating performances against Hyderabad City Police and Mohun Bagan.

But the 1965 and 1966 are those two seasons which were very tough for them, as they got knocked out by Delhi Garrison and EME Centre, however, they bounced back and turned the tables to clinch another title in 1967, when they got a win over Madras Regimental Centre.

From 2000 to 2009, they have had mixed Durand Cup campaigns despite winning the title twice; the 10-year journey just showcased the inconsistency.

In their recent games in 2023 they won against Gokulam and also edged past Shillong Lajong FC in 2024 but the biggest win came in a Kolkata Derby after so long as they knocked out Mohun Bagan from the competition in 2025.

East Bengal FC played against Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup quarterfinals four times, where they booked win twice, and two games were drawn in 1993 and 1994.

But in the recent fixture, East Bengal got the better of Mohun Bagan in the 2025 Durand Cup quarterfinals, where they won the game relying on Diamantakos’ brace at the 38th minute and 52nd minute and powered past the Green & Maroon 2-1.

Expectations from East Bengal FC in Durand Cup 2026

The Durand Cup 2026 could be another title for East Bengal FC if they play a good brand of football moving into the new season. With the current squad, they desperately needed a new coach after the departure of head coach Oscar Bruzon. And with the arrival of Antonio Lopez Habas, the coaching problem is sorted for good.

East Bengal FC are the ISL champions, and they are one of the favourites to win the Durand Cup 2026. With a strong midfield and good signings, they could challenge Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United FC for the title.
