The Mariners have one of the best teams in the prestigious tournament as they have produced strong performances in the competition across different generations. Mohun Bagan SG have a very commanding history in the Durand Cup because they have clinched the title for a record 17 times which no other club has done.

From facing some tough opponents like police and services sides, the Green and Marron club have now become the most decorated outfit in the Indian football.

The Kolkata outfit reached the knockout stage of the tournament 22 times, where they as per the available records and statistics won 14 games and faced defeat 3 times, while 5 games ended in draws.

Mohun Bagan SG, the most successful side in the 135 years old tournament, have won the record 17 titles, and with that they might look forward to bringing another title, which will see the trophy cabinet welcome the 18th Durand Cup title. From 1953 to 2023, they ruled the Durand Cup with their convincing gameplay.

1953, 1959, 1960 (joint), 1963, 1964, 1965, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982 (joint), 1984, 1985, 1986, 1994, 2000, and 2023 are the years when the Mariners won the Durand Cup.

They opened their journey back in 1950, when they secured their first Durand Cup quarter-final win against Rajasthan Club, but failed to clinch the final title. Just three years later, in 1953, they were defeated by the India Culture League, but managed to win the Durand Cup title for the first time.

The club returned to winning ways in 1959 and 1960, where they beat Indian Air Force in two consecutive quarter final appearances, and in both editions they were able to win the title.

From 1960 to the start of 1970, they have had very mixed results, turning up as they won the title for three consecutive years which marked the date as Mohun Bagan clinched a hat-trick of titles and from the later part of 1970, another series of strong results for the Green and Maroon made everyone’s eyes as they defeated Madras Regimental Centre.

In recent years, in 2023 when they lifted the title for the last time, Mohun Bagan edged past Mumbai City FC in the quarter finals following with another knockout draw against Punjab FC in 2024.

Memorable Kolkata Derby

Mohun Bagan never provided a good amount of performances in the Durand Cup quarter-final when they faced Bengal FC in the Kolkata Derby encounter in 1998, suffering a defeat against East Bengal, while the two rivals played out a draw in both of their meeting in 1993, as this match added another chapter to the long-running rivalry between the two Kolkata giants.

But in the recent fixture, East Bengal got the better of Mohun Bagan in the 2025 Durand Cup Quarter Finals, where they won the game relying on Diamantakos’ brace at the 38th minute and 52nd minute and powered past the Green & Maroon 2-1.
