Mohun Bagan vs Bengaluru FC: Three key battles that could decide Durand Cup semi-final
The Mariners will meet the Blues once again in a high-stake tussle.
It’s time for a high-voltage clash when two stalwarts in Indian club football Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC lock horns at the iconic Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan for the second semi-final of Durand Cup 2024. The game will kick off on 27th August, at 5:30 P.M.
These two sides have been clashing for over a decade now, and whenever the much-awaited fixture happens, we sense a unique blend of fierce and closely-fought matches. This time similarly both sides are well-equipped and we can expect another close encounter.
On that note, let’s look at some close battles that could decide the fortune of the clubs in this tournament:
1. Tom Aldred vs Jorge Pereyra Diaz
Aldred has started all of Mohun Bagan’s games in this Durand Cup. His apt interceptions and tackles helped the Mariners stay assured in the defense. However, his game against Punjab FC was not up to the mark with many complaining about his fitness and stamina.
Pereyra Diaz has been one of the top performers for Bengaluru FC in the ongoing tournament. With three goals and an assist in just four games, he has boasted cutthroat potency. He needs to retain his form against Mohun Bagan, which will be his toughest test till now. Aldred needs to work on his pace as well if he intends to block Diaz.
2. Apuia vs Alberto Noguera
Whichever side dominates the midfield will already have an edge over the other in this game. Mohun Bagan’s new signing Apuia hasn’t gotten too many minutes yet. However, he is expected to take on key responsibilities in this game. His ability to block incoming chances and cater to the forward line will be crucial.
Noguera has been another key performer for Bengaluru FC this season. He has dominated the midfield and has often been seen penetrating defenses with his line-breaking passes. He needs to help his side bypass Apuia and catch the Mohun Bagan defense off-guard with occasional shots.
3. Dimitri Petratos vs Rahul Bheke
Petratos is undoubtedly Mohun Bagan’s star forward and practically ruled the ISL last season. In Durand Cup 2024, he played as a substitute in the last game for only a few minutes. But now, while facing their toughest opponents, Petratos is expected to start and strike goals.
Rahul Bheke will have a major role to play. His often praised defensive abilities would be put to the test against the most lethal attack-line of the tournament. He has to play error-free football and be perfect with his game as marking Petratos and deflecting his shots will be his primary objective.
