I-League clubs face uncertain future amid AIFF’s new strategy
Recent AIFF Decisions can lead to financial ruin for I-League clubs.
The Indian football’s second division I-League is staring at a bleak future following the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) recent moves. The I-League Clubs Association (ILCA) has raised serious concerns about the survival of the league, the youth development ecosystem, and the players dependent on it.
The federation’s support for plans for state Franchise Leagues and changes to the promotion structure have sparked widespread criticism among stakeholders and fans.
Are the state franchise leagues going to replace I-League?
One of the most significant issues is the sprouting of the state franchise leagues, which have received AIFF’s backing. I-League’s clubs believe that the emergence of state franchise leagues will disrupt the traditional promotion and demotion format.
Under the supposed new system, 2-3 clubs from the State Franchise League will be promoted directly to a National League, thereby bypassing the I-League. The winners of the National League would then be granted entry into the Indian Super League (ISL). These restructuring plans undermine the I-League, and risk relegating it to obscurity and putting its existence at risk.

Broadcasting issue
I-League clubs are already grappling with severe financial challenges. Apart from a few clubs, majority of them will be operating without sponsorships this season due to the lack of any broadcasting deal. Without sponsorship deals, clubs find it difficult to sustain their day-to-day operations due to high costs.
Club expenditures are extensive and include covering player salaries, staff wages, accommodation during away games, stadium maintenance, and academy expenses, including food, lodging, and education for young players. The absence of external financial support or sponsorship deals has made many clubs fear they won’t survive in the long run. The ILCA emphasizes that the survival of the I-League ecosystem is vital for Indian football’s grassroots development.
I-League is important for grassroots development
While talking about the ecosystem’s importance, Real Kashmir co-founder Arshad Shawl has urged the AIFF to extend support. Shawl highlighted the importance of the league as a foundation for nurturing raw talent. Along with other club owners, the Real Kashmir co-founder has called on AIFF to recognize the I-League as the cornerstone of Indian football.
He alluded to the success of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) as the representation of a strong unity between a league and their federation. The Kabaddi Federation’s synergy with the stakeholders and roping in Star Sports’ extensive broadcasting reach have propelled the popularity of the sport across India. The ILCA believe that similar backing from the AIFF, along with adequate broadcasting arrangements, could transform the league’s fortunes.
However, the current neglect by India’s apex football body leaves clubs like Real Kashmir vulnerable to running out of business In their recent meeting with the press, the ILCA has warned that the long-term survival of the clubs and the league’s ecosystem depends on proactive steps from the federation.
The AIFF’s failure to act puts India at risk of losing one of its most historic footballing platforms. For the players, fans, and thousands of others tied to the league, the clock is running out soon. The I-League, which has been a vital part of Indian football’s identity, has been relegated to a mere afterthought.
