India got knocked out of AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in group stage

The Indian women’s football team have experienced a drop in their place in the latest FIFA Women’s Rankings after their recent disappointment at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026. The Blue Tigresses have had a rocky start to 2026, which also resulted in an underwhelming outing in their first AFC Women’s Asian Cup participation after almost two decades.

The Indian women’s team are currently placed in the 69th place in the FIFA Women’s Rankings after the latest update in April 2026. The Blue Tigresses have fallen two places from their previous position in the rankings, witnessing a drop of 22 coefficient points in their tally as well.

The Blue Tigresses have now fallen behind the Iran women’s team in the FIFA Women’s rankings, with Iran just a place above them. In terms of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) national teams in the rankings, India are in 13th place among the AFC nations in the FIFA rankings.

What caused India’s fall in FIFA Rankings?

The reason for India women’s fall in the latest FIFA rankings is mostly because of their poor performances in 2026. The Blue Tigresses had a forgettable outing in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, which took place in Australia.

Even though they were placed in a difficult group against teams like Japan (who eventually won the tournament), Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, the Blue Tigresses were unable to pull off any miracles.

They lost all three of their matches at the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. This included a narrow 2-1 defeat to Vietnam in their first game, followed by a 11-0 thrashing from Japan. Even though India had a chance of making it through to the knockout stages if they defeated Chinese Taipei in their final game, they ended up suffering a 3-1 defeat in that game as well – knocking them out of the competition.

After the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the Blue Tigresses travelled to Nairobi (Kenya) to take place in the 2026 FIFA Women’s Series matches in April (2026). They ended up suffering a 2-0 lost to hosts Kenya in their first match but were able to at least grab their first win of 2026 by defeating Malawi women in the third-place playoff match afterward.

Despite their recent win, the Indian women’s team have ended up falling down the ladder in the FIFA women’s rankings.

The Blue Tigresses will be back in action in May (2026), when they take part in the SAFF Women’s Championship and winning that tournament could help them potentially move up the FIFA Women’s rankings table as well!

Who are some major movers in FIFA Women’s rankings?

Japan have definitely benefitted from having won the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup tournament in Australia. They have moved three places upwards in the latest FIFA Women’s rankings, taking up the fifth position in the rankings and being the highest-ranked AFC national team in the tally as well!

The Japanese side has managed to jump over the likes of Brazil and France in the FIFA Women’s rankings, which itself is a major indication of how they continue to rise as a superpower in women’s football.

The Spain women’s national team are still on top of the FIFA Women’s rankings, maintaining their place in the no.1 position after having won four of their last five matches.

The US Women’s National Team are currently second in the FIFA Women’s rankings, with England taking up the third position after jumping over Germany in the latest rankings update.
