This is the Indian women’s team’s worst FIFA ranking in history.

The Indian women’s team had a heartbreaking start to 2024 as they lost the final of the 2024 Turkish Women’s Cup. The Blue Tigresses were possibly the best side in the tournament, but ran out of luck in the ultimate game.

India recorded their best-ever performance at the Turkish Women’s Cup by finishing as the runners-up with six points in three matches to their name. They were ever so close to winning their first-ever senior title outside the SAFF region before succumbing to an injury-time winner from Kosovo.

After the men’s senior team dropped positions last month, the Blue Tigresses have dropped down to 66 from 65 in the March 2024 FIFA rankings despite a good performance in the Turkish Women’s Cup. It is the lowest-ever FIFA ranking for the Blue Tigresses in the history of Indian football.

It was India’s best chance to win the championship after forgetful outings in the past. India were the favorites going into the Turkish Women’s Cup, thanks to their superior FIFA ranking of 65. But, all their plans went out of the window when Ereleta Memeti scored an injury-time winner for 100th-ranked Kosovo in the final game of the championship.

The Blue Tigresses began their campaign with a statement 4-3 win over Estonia last month. They then went on to smash Hong Kong 2-0 to get two wins in two games before facing two-time champions Kosovo in the final.

India were the more dominant side for the majority of the game against Kosovo with Manisha Kalyan, Soumya Guguloth and Pyari Xaxa pulling the strings and making things happen on the pitch. They did everything right, but lacked the all-important finishing touch alongside some luck in their favour.
