Sergio Lobera highlights missed chances in Mohun Bagan SG’s loss to Mumbai City

Mumbai City FC hand Mohun Bagan SG their first loss of the season

Mohun Bagan SG suffered their first loss of the Sergio Lobera era as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Mumbai City in the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, on Friday (20 March, 2026).

The result helped the Islanders go atop the ISL table and for the Mariners to fall down to second place for the first time in the campaign.

Sergio Lobera voiced his dismay at seeing his side suffer this kind of a loss against the Islanders, as he stated: “It’s painful to lose at home like this. We have to analyze the game, especially the first half and we tried everything to score in the second goal. We need to understand how we need to improve; we tried too hard against a good opponent, and we feel we deserve a point in the game.”

When asked if he felt his overly attack tactics for this game came back to haunt his side, the gaffer replied: “I feel in the first half, we played in their box and we needed to have more balance upon losing the balance and to be in better positions in attacking opponents.”

“Mumbai City have good players in counter-attacks and if we have control of the ball, it’s difficult for them to have good chances in the first half. In the second half, we did everything to score and we deserved more. We need to learn more from everything as possible and do as possible against Jamshedpur.”

With Mohun Bagan SG set to face off against another title rival in Jamshedpur FC in their next ISL game after the March (2026) title race, the Spanish gaffer was asked if this loss to Mumbai City amplified the need to win that game.

Lobera replied: “We know that from the beginning that this will be tough season and the margin of mistakes is less.”

“We had a good opportunity today to finish top of the table, and with pick an advantage on our title rivals. We are now in the fight, and the next game is very important for us. We are in the same situation of Jamshedpur, we’ll play in their situation, we are professional, and we can win the game for sure,” he added.

Finally, despite suffering a setback in their march for the 2025-26 ISL title after this loss to Mumbai City, Lobera is not giving up on Mohun Bagan SG’s chances of winning the title.

He stated: “This is painful for us, it’s true that after losing this game for us is hard as we wanted to stay top of the table with a big difference with Mumbai City. We could’ve been five points top and now they’re top of the table.”

“I think this season will be difficult, but we are ready to compete at highest level and to win the trophy.  We are going to fight to win the trophy and the only positive thing from this result is that we must learn and try to win the next game against the next opponent,” he added.
