Two players to have scored four goals in single Indian Super League match

Maclaren scored 4 goals against Odisha FC in Indian Super League 2025-26

The Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season has begun in a blistering fashion, with teams fighting hard to compete for the prize of winning the championship. It’s been the platform for some highly entertaining matches and also some rather impressive feats being achieved by some players in the competition.

However, something truly unique took place in Mohun Bagan SG’s recent 5-1 thrashing of Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. The Mariners have had a pretty brilliant start to the Sergio Lobera era, having won all their four matches under the Spanish gaffer so far and being able to compete at a very high level.

With that win over Odisha FC, they underlined their intent to push for another ISL title. The match also witnessed a special moment as striker Jamie Maclaren achieved a remarkable feat.

The Australian forward, who had scored in the Mariners’ first three matches of the 2025-26 ISL campaign, did one better in a rather splendid fashion against Odisha FC.

The Maclaren show in Kolkata

It was Maclaren who put his side in front with a clever header from close range. However, that ended up only being the beginning of a terrific four goal haul from Maclaren.

Indeed, the Australian forward was able to produce a truly special performance to thrill the Mohun Bagan SG fans at the Salt Lake Stadium.

After scoring the opening goal in a clever manner, Maclaren was also able to help double Mohun Bagan SG’s lead – as he latched onto a clever pass from Liston Colaco before burying a shot into the back of the net.

The Australian forward would complete his hat-trick in the end of the first half, converting a chance from close range to soar to the top of the ISL Golden Boot charts.

However, the Australian star wasn’t done with that, and he received a bit of a ‘second wind’ to his performance in the second half.

Towards the end of the game, Maclaren was played through on goal and managed to reach the ball before Amrinder Singh – converting his chance to score his fourth goal in the 5-1 win for Mohun Bagan SG.

In doing so, Maclaren achieved the highly rare feat of scoring four goals in a single ISL campaign. This had only been achieved one time in the history of the Indian Super League before Maclaren, and it was another clinical striker to have done the same.

Which other player scored four goals in a single ISL match?

The first-ever player to achieve the memorable feat of scoring four goals in a single ISL match was former Mumbai City striker Modou Sougou.

The Senegalese forward arrived at Mumbai City FC in 2018, after having enjoyed a pretty memorable career in which he played for notable European clubs like Olympique Marseille as well as CFR Cluj, even playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Sougou was able to make quite the impact in the 2018-19 ISL campaign for Mumbai City and he produced a terrific performance in their 6-1 thrashing of Kerala Blasters.

Sougou was definitely in his prime goal-scoring form in the game, as he opened the scoring with a clever close-range finish to help his side get the lead.

The Senegalese forward would score his second goal with a terrific strike from outside the post that caught the Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh by surprise.

Sougou completed his hat-trick within the first 30 minutes, converting another chance from close range to help his side take a 3-1 lead. What is rather fascinating is that Subhasish Bose had assisted Sougou’s third goal against Kerala Blasters, and the Indian defender also provided the assist for the first of Maclaren’s four-goal haul against Odisha FC.

Sougou, meanwhile, scored his fourth goal of the game in the dying minutes of the match, as he capitalized on a defensive mistake to pass the ball into an empty net.

For over seven years, Modou kept the record of being the only player in ISL history to have a four-goal haul, but that has now been matched by the terrific Jamie Maclaren, who appears to be blitzing his way to winning the Golden Boot!
