Robson Robinho has become a bit of a controversial figure at Mohun Bagan SG in his debut season. The Brazilian winger is facing a lot of backlash from supporters for seemingly failing to meet the high standards they expected from him as the Kolkata giants head into the final stretch of their Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season.

Ironically, Robinho is actually the Mariners’ second-highest goal scorer in the ISL 2025-26 campaign, with three goals in his tally.

However, a lack of consistency when it comes to such goal contributions and his failing to match the high standards set by his predecessor Greg Stewart last season have left fans underwhelmed about the Brazilian winger.

It’s not like Robson has been having an absolutely torrid debut campaign with the Mariners. Despite dealing with a few injury troubles, he has still managed four goal contributions (three goals, one assist) in eight starts and been entertaining to watch.

He has completed 10 dribbles and been entertaining to watch, but the Brazilian needs to add more decisiveness to his product. Indeed, Robinho tends to get the ball in promising areas in the opposition half – but he needs to make things count after receiving possession.

Robson has to be way more unpredictable with his movement and dribbling, trying out a variety of different tricks to dupe defenders and opening up space in the final third for his teammates. He cannot keep trying the same moves repeatedly and expect results, because ISL defenders will find him out.

The Brazilian has to add a fear factor and sense of unpredictability to Mohun Bagan SG’s attacks in the next two games for them to play free-flowing attacking football and take the fight to their opponents.

The reason why Robson Robinho was roped in by Mohun Bagan SG was to add a boost of creative threat to their attacking line. For Bashundhara Kings, the Brazilian winger had managed to provide 51 assists in 102 matches – which is basically one assist every two games.

However, for the Mariners, he’s only bagged one assist in nine appearances heading into the final two matches of the 2025-26 ISL season. Robinho has created 15 chance sin the competition so far and been decent with his passing, averaging a 79.4% passing accuracy so far.

However, he definitely needs to be way more clutch and accurate with his final passes to open up opposition defences and set up big scoring chances for Jamie Maclaren & co. Robinho has to be more precise with his crosses or even the through balls he tries making to help his teammates.

Moreover, he is also quite impressive with his set-piece delivery and can add more quality to Mohun Bagan SG’s set-piece threat. Indeed, Robson can be given the corner or free-kick duties and urged to swing in inviting crosses to help enhance Mohun Bagan SG’s threat from set-pieces, which can be pivotal for them to win the last two games and clinch the championship.

1. More ruthlessness in finishing off chances

Robson Robinho was an extremely prolific goal-scorer at Bashundhara Kings, scoring 63 goals in 102 appearances for them and that definitely played a factor in Mohun Bagan SG signing him before the 2025-26 ISL campaign.

The Brazilian, however, has struggled to maintain that kind of ruthlessness and goal-scoring consistency with the Kolkata giants. Robinho might be the Mariners’ second-highest scorer this season in the ISL with three goals, but those have only come in two games – a brace in the 5-1 thrashing of Mohammedan SC and a winner in the 1-0 win over NorthEast United.

Surely Robinho needs to be way more clinical in getting at the end of chances and finishing them off clinically to inspire Mohun Bagan SG to a thrilling end to the season.

If the Brazilian winger is able to creep into more goal-scoring situations and score a few vital goals to help secure Mohun Bagan SG the ISL title, then they’d probably be compelled to keep him at the club for at least another season and let him prove how lethal he can be next season.
