Chennaiyin FC defeated Bengaluru FC in the 2017/18 ISL finals.

Two former Indian Super League champions, Chennaiyin FC and Bengaluru FC, are set to face off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai in their final match of the 2025/26 ISL season.

The fixture, popularly known as the ‘Southern Derby’, has historically been one of the fiercest rivalries in ISL. While the two sides once regularly battled for silverware and ISL titles, both clubs, particularly Chennaiyin FC, have seen a sharp decline in recent years.

The Marina Machans currently sit 13th in the league table with just two wins from 12 matches. Clifford Miranda’s side are without a win in their last four outings and head into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats.

Chennaiyin FC are also the second-lowest scoring side in the league this season. In many ways, they will be relieved that Mohammedan SC have been forced to play under a transfer ban with an all-Indian squad, because under different circumstances, the Marina Machans could have found themselves rooted to the bottom of the table and staring at possible relegation.

As for Bengaluru FC, their campaign also witnessed a difficult spell midway through the season. The Blues endured a four-game winless run, losing once and drawing three matches after replacing Renedy Singh with Pep Muñoz as head coach. However, the Spaniard finally secured his first victory in the previous game as Bengaluru FC defeated Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC 1-0 at the Furnace thanks to Ryan’s winner.

The Blues will now look to build on that momentum and finish the season strongly against a Chennaiyin FC side, who are low on confidence and look defensively poor, conceding nine goals in the last three games.

Over the years, Chennaiyin FC and Bengaluru FC have shared several memorable and high-intensity encounters, including an ISL final. Supporters of both clubs were heavily involved in fan rivalries during the peak years of the Southern Derby, although the intensity surrounding the fixture has reduced in recent seasons.

The two sides have faced each other 17 times in the ISL, with Bengaluru FC holding a clear advantage. The Blues have won 10 matches, while Chennaiyin FC have managed just four victories. The remaining three encounters ended in draws, and the clubs have not faced each other in any competition outside the ISL.

The most significant clash between the two teams came during the 2017/18 ISL final. Chennaiyin FC overturned a 1-0 deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory and lift their second ISL title. Sunil Chhetri and Miku were on target for Bengaluru FC, while Mailson Alves and Raphael Augusto scored for the Marina Machans.

Recent history has heavily favoured Bengaluru FC. Chennaiyin FC have managed just one win in the last 12 meetings between the two sides, underlining the Blues’ dominance in this fixture in recent years. That solitary victory came during the 2023/24 season when Owen Coyle’s side secured a 2-0 win.

The most recent meeting between the clubs ended in a 1-0 victory for Bengaluru FC, with Rahul Bheke scoring the decisive goal. Meanwhile, the last encounter between the two sides at the Marina Arena in Chennai finished in an emphatic 4-2 win for Bengaluru FC, with Ryan Williams netting a brace and Sunil Chhetri also finding the back of the net.
