Rodrigues saves the day for Mumbai, as both teams share spoils.
Two-headed goals and the 1000th game of the Indian Super League between Chennaiyin FC and Mumbai City FC ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. This is the first time since January 25, 2021, that Chennaiyin FC managed to earn a point against Mumbai City FC after seven matches.
Both teams took two shots on target, which the respective custodians saved. Ryan Edwards broke the deadlock. Connor Shields’ perfect cross found Edwards in the centre, and the ball crossed the goal line after touching the right crossbar.
However, Chennaiyin FC could not hold the lead for long. Nathan Rodriguez’s header left Nawaz with no chance and gave Mumbai City FC the equalizer within three minutes of the first goal. Here are the ratings of the Indian players in the game:
Chennaiyin FC (By Parashar Kalita)
Mohammad Nawaz – 6.5
Nawaz made two brilliant saves in the first half. He had no chance to stop the equalizer. He looked injured in the additional time of the second half. In total, he made three saves in the game.
Renthlei Laldinliana – 6.5
In the 38th minute, Laldinliana combined with Wilmar Jordán, he got a goal-scoring opportunity but failed to connect as he moved slightly forward. In defence, he contributed with two clearances and one interception.
Bikash Yumnam – 6
The center-back created a chance for Farukh Choudhary in the first half. Received a yellow card in the 56th minute. Defensively, he made three clearances and three interceptions.
PC Laldinpuia – 6
The left-back received a yellow card in the 52nd minute and will miss the next match due to accumulating four yellow cards. Defensively, he made three interceptions, including a crucial one in the 50th minute, along with two tackles and one clearance.
Irfan Yadwad – 6
Played in the left-wing position and attempted a few crosses. In the 51st minute, his header went off target. Completed ten passes out of fifteen.
Farukh Choudhary – 6
Farukh attempted a header in the 22nd minute, but it was blocked. He tried to play through balls to his teammates. He intercepted a ball in the defensive half of the first half and passed it to Connor Shields, who the Islanders’ defense dispossessed. Substituted out the 64th minute.
Vincy Barretto – 6.5
Barretto got a one-on-one chance to score in the 8th minute but couldn’t connect properly, and Lachenpa made a save. He won a free kick in the opposition’s half, which was converted into a goal by Ryan Edwards.
Substitutions
Lalrinliana Hnamte – 5
Came on in the 65th minute. Not much impactful.
Kiyan Nassiri – NA
Gurkirat Singh – NA
Mumbai City FC (by Anuj T)
Phurba Lachenpa – 6
Made important saves in the game, including an acrobatic save in the first half. While Chennaiyin’s goal came from a set piece, Lachenpa performed well and kept them in the game.
Hmingthan Mawia – 5.5
Played well in the game and shielded the ball from the opposition. Wasn’t able to break free from his attackers and venture forward enough.
Mehtab Singh – 5.5
Had a relatively underwhelming game and got booked early in the first half in the 42nd minute.
Nathan Asher Rodrigues – 7
Possibly the best player on the pitch and by some distance from both teams. Nathan again showed his true quality and provided an immediate response with his headed goal in the 63rd minute to cancel out Ryan Edwards’ 60th-minute goal. A standout performer who nearly won the game for MCFC.
Brandon Fernandes – 5
A relatively tough night for Fernandes wherein both midfields cancelled out each other. Wasn’t able to influence the game much and had the rough end of the stock on Saturday.
Lallianzualla Chhangte- 5.5
Chhangte got severely marked out of the game by Chennaiyin. The pacy winger was kept at bay with a vengeance by Chennai’s defenders. A game wherein deep midfield runs were his sole way of influence, a night to forget for Chhangte.
Bipin Singh- 5
Got substituted in the 67th minute for Noufal PN. Had a relatively uneventful game. Needs to step up to maintain his starting place.
Substitutes
Noufal PN- 5.5
Came on as a substitute in the 67th minute. Looked lively for the MCFC and made his typical lung-busting runs for his team.
Jayesh Rane-5.5
Replaced Brandon Fernandes in the 46th minute and was a better midfield outlet from defense to offense. Rane still needs to show real quality to ensure continued selection in the first-team setup.
