The Islanders have reached the final on two different occasions

Mumbai City FC are one of the most entertaining Indian Super League teams to watch. The club believes in playing an attacking brand of football which has brought it a lot of success in recent years. Keeping with the trend of reaching the business end of recent ISL seasons, the Islanders have set up a mouth-watering clash with Mohun Bagan SG in the final of the 2023-24 campaign.

This will be the second time Mumbai City FC finds itself playing in the final of the Indian Super League playoffs. The outfit won the ISL Trophy when it reached the final for the first time. Petr Kratky, the current head coach of the Islanders, would be aiming to deliver a second ISL playoff title after taking over the position only six months ago.

As the Islanders prepare to take on an in-form Mohun Bagan SG at the Salt Lake Stadium on 4 May 2024 in the final of the 2023-24 Indian Super League, here is a look at the past final where MCFC was a participant:

2020-21 ISL Final

Mumbai City FC dominated the 2020-21 season of the Indian Super League. It was the first instance when a club won both the ISL League Winners’ Shield and the ISL playoffs trophy in the same season, doing an unprecedented league double. Interestingly, Mumbai City FC met ATK Mohun Bagan in the final of the 2020-21 season, the same opponent that it finds standing between it and glory in the 2023-24 campaign.

During the 2020-21 Indian Super League final, Mumbai City FC emerged as winners thanks to a 2-1 scoreline against ATK Mohun Bagan, a team that finished equal on points during the league stage. In a final that played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 protocols, David Williams gave the Mariners the lead in the 19th minute with a thunderous strike.

However, led by Sergio Lobera’s masterful tactics, Mumbai City FC charted an impressive comeback. Tiri scored an unfortunate own goal in the 29th minute and Bipin Singh scored the winner in injury time of the second half to hand the title to the Islanders in an incredible fashion.

The Islanders will be hoping to re-enact the final performance from the 2020-21 season when they meet Mohun Bagan SG in the final of the 2023-24 season and maintain their hundred per cent winning record in the ISL finals.
