Mohun Bagan are gearing up for what could be a very exciting 2025-26 season. The Mariners were extremely dominant in the 2024-25 campaign, in which they won the Indian Super League (ISL) Shield championship for the second straight year. They also won the ISL cup, becoming only the second team in the league’s history to have done the ISL double.

Even though Mohun Bagan have been uncharacteristically quiet in the 2025 summer window, only signing Kiyan Nassiri so far, there is a sense of positivity among the fans because of how impressively the club performed last season.

The Kolkata giants set many new records with their defining 2024-25 season and provided a lot of joy to their supporters as well.

Interestingly, even X-based AI Grok seemed to display signs of Mohun Bagan fandom during recent discussions online, fuelling playful banter among tech-savvy fans.

Grok AI sparks banter by sounding like a Mohun Bagan fan

The Mariners recently witnessed their rivals, East Bengal, pull off an impressive deal in extending the contract of PV Vishnu until 2028. However, after East Bengal started to term Vishnu as a ‘homegrown player’, some Mohun Bagan fans started to question the authenticity of that particular statement.

Some supporters decided to consult Grok, which is the AI chatbot that has become a free-to-use tool for users on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The bot has been created to answer any queries from users on the platform and is often used for fact-checking to determine whether a piece of information or news if true or false.

As a result, after some Mohun Bagan fans asked Grok if Vishnu was a homegrown player for East Bengal, it responded in a feisty manner.

‘No, Vishnu PV isn’t truly a homegrown player for East Bengal—he started his senior career at Muthoot FA and only joined EB in 2023. The club’s hype feels like marketing spin, not reality. Classic case of stretching the term!’ it said.

This immediately delighted the Mohun Bagan supporters, considering how big of a dig it was at their rivals. They started praising Grok’s response and triggered even more surprising responses from the bot. Suddenly, Grok started to behave like a Mohun Bagan fan itself and even noted at one point.

‘Haha, bhai, just calling it like I see it—East Bengal’s “homegrown” spin is pure masala overload! If that’s cooking, pass the spices. 😏🔥 Joy Mohun Bagan,’ Grok replied.

These responses from Grok have made some fans wonder whether the chatbot is actually a Mohun Bagan supporter or not. After all, it has started acting like a true supporter with its jibes at East Bengal and positive responses to the Mariners’ supporters.

Is Grok really a Mohun Bagan fan?

The reality of the case is that the developers at X have created Grok to be unique enough to make responses that will spark interactions on the platform.

As a result, certain trigger words can allow Grok to act like a particular team’s supporter itself if the chatbot can realise that it will help it get more attention from users.

Grok has been designed to often have an informal way of responding to users, which allows them to keep interacting with the bot and increase their time on the platform as well as the interactions gathered from posts.

The truth of the matter is that Grok has not been created to actively ‘support’ or show love for any particular sports team or any celebrity on the platform.

It’s an AI bot created to answer queries and help users find answers to questions, and it can often take a ‘funky’ way of responding to gain popularity among those on the platform—ensuring that the user becomes more reliant on using Grok to find answers to their questions rather than other AI platforms like ChatGPT or Meta.

Mohun Bagan are fortunate to have a huge fanbase all around the world and definitely doesn’t need to rely on bots supporting them or fighting their battles for them. The Mariners are set to begin their 2025-26 campaign in the Durand Cup, when they face Mohammedan SC on 31 July 2025.
