The Mohun Bagan midfielder played a crucial role and caught the eye of Antonio Habas in season 2023-24.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant have solidified their midfield by extending the contract of young talent Abhishek Suryavanshi. The 23-year-old midfielder, who has shown potential, has signed a three-year deal that will keep him with the ISL League Winners’ Shield winners until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Suryavanshi, hailing from Maharashtra, was a regular feature in the team after Antonio Lopez Habas took over as coach.
Suryavanshi’s journey with Mohun Bagan began with his debut in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season, where he played the full 90 minutes in the opening match.
Abhishek’s, resilience and determination saw him play some flamboyant football against Hyderabad FC after the Kolkata Derby. From that point, Habas consistently included him in the lineup, recognizing his potential and reliability.
Throughout the season, Suryavanshi made 14 appearances, starting in eight matches and coming on as a substitute in six. He was predominantly used as a holding midfielder.
His composure on the field and ability to deliver accurate passes earned him a place in the starting XI on multiple occasions. Last season, Suryavanshi boasted an impressive passing accuracy of 86%, averaging 34 passes per match.
Defensively, Suryavanshi was equally effective. He recovered the ball 62 times, made 26 interceptions and executed 15 clearances. His defensive prowess and tactical awareness were instrumental in Mohun Bagan’s successful campaign.
Despite not featuring in the final, Suryavanshi’s performances throughout the season did not go unnoticed, culminating in a well-deserved contract extension.
The club’s decision to extend Suryavanshi’s contract underscores their faith in his abilities and potential for future contributions. Alongside Suryavanshi, Mohun Bagan also retained another young talent, 21-year-old defender Dippendu Biswas.
Biswas made his ISL debut last season, playing 223 minutes across five matches. His solid performances, which included two starts and three substitute appearances, earned him the continued trust of the coaching staff.
By securing the futures of both Suryavanshi and Biswas, Mohun Bagan are building a robust foundation of young talent, ensuring the team remains competitive in the coming seasons. The club’s strategic approach to nurturing promising players like Suryavanshi reflects their commitment to long-term success.
As Suryavanshi continues to develop and hone his skills, Mohun Bagan fans can look forward to seeing more of his contributions on the field. His journey is a testament to the opportunities that arise from hard work and resilience.
