The 20-year-old was impressive in his outing during the Kalinga Super Cup.

Mohun Bagan opted to field a relatively weakened squad for the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup. This consisted of only a few first-team regulars, with the remainder being filled with reserve players or those promoted from their youth team. While the Mariners were eliminated in the semi-finals, their young guns produced some really encouraging performances.

Mohun Bagan’s young left-back, Amandeep, was particularly impressive in his performances in the Kalinga Super Cup. The 20-year-old showed maturity beyond his years with some admirable performances, showcasing the right kind of energy and attitude to excel for a club like Mohun Bagan. Subhasish Bose, of course, remains the go-to player for the left-back spot within the Mariners squad.

But there is always a need to have multiple players available for key positions, which is why Jose Molina could want more depth in that left-back spot. Amandeep, to his credit, has proven himself capable of getting a senior call-up and now might compete for the left-back spot against Bose. Let us look at why Amandeep can be a solid alternative to the Mohun Bagan skipper.

Ability to support wingers with overlapping runs at Mohun Bagan

Even though Amandeep is the kind of full-back who focuses on defensive work over the attacking contribution, he definitely has it in him to give proper support to the wingers. The youngster is blessed with impressive pace, which means he can dart up and down the wings all throughout the game.

Amandeep can carry the ball forward well, boasting decent close control and a smart link-up play ability. He needs to work on his crossing ability a little bit to be a prominent creative threat on the wide areas, but he can link-up well with the likes of Liston Colaco or Ashique Kuruniyan on the left.

Similar to Bose, Amandeep can make the smart overlapping runs to allow the wingers to drift more inwards into central areas and amplify Mohun Bagan’s goal threat.

Amandeep can mark speedy defenders efficiently

Amandeep faced off against some challenging wingers and forwards in the Kalinga Super Cup, but proved his ability to hold his own against them. The 20-year-old produced a really solid performance against the tricky Mohammed Aimen in the Kerala Blasters clash, completely neutralizing his threat and not giving him any space to work with.

He also frustrated Noah Sadaoui with his diligent defensive work and positioning, stopping him in his tracks as well. Amandeep produced a pretty decent effort in the loss to FC Goa as well, not being able to let them create much through his side or any major crosses being sent in.

Apart from his solid work in marking speedy wingers in the Super Cup, he also did the same with his sturdy performances in the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) to help the Mariners win the 2025 edition too. Amandeep has the game IQ and the physical traits to keep up with the unpredictable wide area players and go toe-to-toe with them.

Energetic and proactive defender at the back

The admirable thing about Amandeep is that he is more than ready to work his socks off for the well-being of his team. He is not afraid of having to run the extra mile or cover more distance than his teammates for the benefits of the entire unit.

The young defender proved that with his efficient performances in the Super Cup, in which he ran long distances to keep the wide players quiet and stop that many chances from happening through his wing. Amandeep’s energy levels is a key reason why he tends to consistently get into the key areas to stop the opponents from creating chances or get into goal-scoring areas.

The 20-year-old defender’s running ability and high energy levels is why he can be an ideal replacement for Subhasish when Mohun Bagan need to rest their skipper.
