These two sides have played some mouth-watering clashes

Mohun Bagan are set to face off against Mumbai City FC in the 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) final on Saturday (May 4). The two sides are ready to fight for the ISL championship at the Salt Lake Stadium after having fought hard for the ISL league title too.

The Mariners came out on top in that regard with a dramatic win over the Islanders in their final league game to take the top spot. Now, they aim to do the ISL double by winning the title and capping off a brilliant season. Mumbai City, however, are adamant about getting their revenge and ending their campaign with a trophy too.

Over the last few years, the matches between these two sides have been action-packed and emotional affairs. They have tended to get quite feisty and aggressive too because of how desperate each team is to get one over another. With that being said, the game between the Mariners and the Islanders which witnessed the most number of goals took place back in 2021.

The highest-scoring clash between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC

The highest-scoring match between these sides happened towards the beginning of the 2021-22 ISL season. Antonio Habas’ side totally dominated their ‘home game’ against Sergio Lobera’s Mumbai City FC at the closed-doors match in Goa. The Mariners actually headed into that game in impressive form, having won their first two matches of the season – including a 3-0 thrashing of East Bengal.

However, their golden streak was ruthlessly snapped by the Islanders. Mumbai City FC had the perfect plan and were able to totally deconstruct and expose the vulnerabilities of the Mariners’ backline. Vikram Pratap Singh put his side in the lead with a smart goal in the 4th minute, before being able to double in the 25th minute too.

The Mariners’ backline was repeatedly breached by Mumbai City FC’s fast breaks and they made it 3-0 in the 38th minute through Igor Angulo’s goal. Things went from bad to worse for Habas’ side after midfielder Deepak Tangri was sent off just after the beginning of the second half for receiving his second yellow card. Mourtada Fall added insult to injury by scoring just one minute after his sending-off (47’) to give his side an unassailable lead.

But Lobera’s side was not done in flexing their attacking power. They kept going at the Mariners and scored their fifth goal through Bipin Singh in the 52nd minute to silence the Kolkata side. David Williams would go on to score a goal in the 60th minute, one which would only prove to be a consolation and the game somewhat mellowed down after that.

The loss hit the Mariners hard, as it sparked the beginning of a four-match winless run which led to Habas’ being sacked from his position as their head coach on December 18. Mumbai City FC will look for a similarly dominant performance to prove their quality at the Salt Lake Stadium, while Habas will urge his side to maintain their impressive form to help him win another ISL title.
