Mohun Bagan will desperately look to win the exciting ISL clash against Mumbai City FC.

The stage is set for a dramatic finale in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 Shield race as Mohun Bagan lock horns with Mumbai City at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. While Mumbai City sit comfortably at the top, Mohun Bagan, fueled by a late-season resurgence under Antonio Habas, desperately need a win to snatch the Shield away from the Islanders.

Historically, head-to-head encounters between these two sides have heavily favored Mumbai City. In their last nine meetings across all competitions, The Islanders boast a dominant record with six wins to their name, with Mohun Bagan registering a single victory. The two teams have only managed to salvage a draw twice.

The last meeting between the two sides earlier this season was a feisty encounter filled with red cards. Mumbai City secured a narrow 2-1 victory at the Mumbai Football Arena, ending Mohun Bagan’s unbeaten run. Bipin Singh’s 73rd-minute winner sealed the deal for the Islanders after Greg Stewart canceled Jason Cummings’ opener for Mohun Bagan.

This lopsided record adds significant pressure to Mohun Bagan’s shoulders. They’ll need a flamboyant performance exceeding their 4-0 thrashing of Bengaluru FC if they are to overcome the in-form Mumbai City. Not only will the Mariners need to be ruthless offensively also defensively sound, but they’ll also have to break this psychological barrier against their dominant rivals.

On the other hand, Mumbai City can afford a slightly more relaxed approach. Even a draw would secure the Shield for them. But coach Petr Kratky is unlikely to settle for a point, and the Islanders will likely maintain their high-pressing, possession-dominating style to silence the Kolkata crowd with a clinical performance.

Despite the historical advantage, Mumbai City should not underestimate a resurgent Mohun Bagan under Habas. The Mariners have proven their mettle in recent weeks, and the passionate home crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium will provide an additional boost. It’s surely going to be a nail-biting encounter.
