The game took place last year and remained witness to seven goals!
Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC face off in their final match of the 2023-24 season in the second leg of their Indian Super League (ISL) semi-finals at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Sunday (April 28). With the Juggernauts having taken a 2-1 lead in the first leg, it’s now on the Mariners to turn things around at their own yard.
Mohun Bagan need to win the game by a two-goal margin to progress to the final. Odisha FC have to either win or play out a draw to oust the Mariners. For a penalty shootout, the game needs to end at 2-1 after extra-time. Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC have actually faced off against each other five times in the 2023-24 season.
The highest-scoring clash between Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC
Almost every game has been a thrilling, action-packed encounter with lots of drama. But one match that really stands out was the one that took place in the AFC Cup group stages. In their first game of the 2023-24 campaign, Mohun Bagan had defeated Odisha FC by a 4-0 margin at the Kalinga Stadium.
What followed in the second AFC Cup game was an absolute goal-fest. Sergio Lobera’s side was desperate for revenge and produced a tour de force at the Salt Lake Stadium. Incidentally, Mohun Bagan were the team that had a flying start in front of their home fans in that AFC Cup clash, with Hugo Boumous giving them a lead with a well-taken goal in the 17th minute.
However, the Mariners seemingly became a bit complacent after that and were taken aback by how Odisha amped up their performance levels. The Juggernauts tormented the hosts with their clever pressing and fast breaks, with Roy Krishna (29’), Diego Mauricio (32’) and Cy Goddard (41’), all scoring to give them a 3-1 lead heading into half-time.
Mohun Bagan’s defensive vulnerabilities were perfectly exposed by Lobera’s tactics, with Odisha’s swift counter-attacks catching the hosts by surprise. The Mariners’ then-head coach Juan Ferrando was forced into substitutions as Kiyan Nassiri came on in the second half and scored a clever goal in the 63rd minute to give his side a lifeline.
However, the Mariners just weren’t clinical enough and wasted a number of key chances in the second half. Odisha made them pay – with Aniket Jadhav and Isak Vanlalruetfela both scoring in additional time to secure a famous 5-2 win for the Juggernauts, as this result significantly amplified their ability to win their group and move on to the AFC Cup knockout rounds.
This result remains the highest-scoring game between these two sides so far. It’s probably one that Odisha FC will hope to replicate at the Salt Lake Stadium again. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan fans will hope that their side topples this with an even bigger win in the upcoming semi-final leg.
