Three Mohun Bagan Super Giant players to pose biggest threat to Bengaluru FC in ISL Final

The Mariners are in the hunt for a second ISL title.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant faces a stern test in the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) final when they face off against Bengaluru FC. This will be the third meeting in the ISL campaign between these sides, with the two tied at one win apiece before this huge clash.

The Mariners are coming off a thrilling win over Jamshedpur FC in the semifinal and need to bring their very best to the plate to defeat this in-form Bengaluru FC side. That not only includes being at their best defensively, maintaining a stubborn defensive line to frustrate the Blues, but also being clinical in converting their opportunities.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant have a number of match-winners in their squad who can turn the tides of the game with ease. Here we look at the three players who can potentially pose the biggest threat to the Bengaluru FC players in the final:

3. Jamie Maclaren

Maclaren had a forgettable outing in the ISL semi-final against Jamshedpur FC. He only had a short cameo in the first leg and was marked out of the match in the second leg in Kolkata. However, the Australian forward remains Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s biggest threat in the final third because of his sheer quality in terms of finishing chances.

Maclaren is still Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s highest scorer this season with 11 goals, which included five in the final four matches of the ISL league phase. He’ll be determined to regain that form heading into the final in Kolkata.

In fact, six of his goals have come at the Salt Lake Stadium, with the fans’ support amping up his own energy levels in matches at the ground. Maclaren has managed a 35.48% goal conversion rate so far, managing 11 goals from just 20 shots on target.

The statistics show that the majority of his shots on target result in goals, but Maclaren has to be smarter with his work to get at the end of chances. If he can get past his marker in the final third and track his side’s attacking pattern, Maclaren can be a tormenting factor for the Blues and significantly improve his side’s chances of winning the final.

2. Liston Colaco

Liston Colaco impressed in the March international break for the Indian football team, but he’s since struggled to bring that form to the Mohun Bagan Super Giant team. He had a quiet outing in the semis against Jamshedpur FC, but the winger will hope to reserve his best for the last game of the campaign.

Colaco has a pretty good record against Bengaluru FC this season, having scored against them earlier this season. The 26-year-old can be a menacing factor for Namgyal Bhutia and his teammates with his blistering runs through the left wing and ability to get himself into the danger areas in the final third.

Liston can be a real unpredictable threat in the attacking areas, because of his ability to blast powerful shots on goals from afar as well as swinging in inviting crosses from the left wing. He just needs to nail his decision-making in and around the penalty area to properly amplify his goal threat and help break the Blues’ stubborn defensive shape.

1. Jason Cummings

Jason Cummings is probably Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s most in-form player heading into the ISL final and coming off an excellent outing in the semifinal. He scored an amazing free-kick in the first leg against Jamshedpur FC before also slotting away the penalty for the game in Kolkata.

The 29-year-old has managed six goals and six assists in 24 games this season, and he’s flying high on momentum and confidence right now. Cummings has thrived in the second striker role he’s been put in by Jose Molina this season with the Mariners.

It gives him more freedom to dictate how his side creates all their attacking chances and help him set up some big chances with his slick final third passes too. Cummings will look to break the stern Bengaluru FC defensive shape by venturing into the empty areas in their half, detecting the gaps in their backline, and playing clever passes through them to his teammates.

He will look to create chances from set-pieces as well, nailing his crosses to help his players get a big chance of scoring. Cummings will, of course, also look to get at the end of chances and produce some crisp finishes to torment Gurpreet.

As long as the Aussie striker is on song and operating at optimum levels, Mohun Bagan Super Giant should produce a thrilling display in the final at the Salt Lake Stadium. The Mariners are going to welcome Bengaluru FC to the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata on April 12 (Saturday) for the ISL Final.
