Iker Guarrotxena couldn’t play in the latter stages of the ISL due to an injury.
Mumbai City FC scripted an iconic comeback in Kolkata to snatch the ISL title from the hands of league shield winners Mohun Bagan. The Islanders settled scores with the Mariners and put up a 10/10 performance to lift their second ISL trophy.
It wasn’t an easy season for the City Football Group-owned outfit as they faced multiple setbacks including the departure of head coach Des Buckingham and injury to many key players. But, despite so many things not going their way, they emerged as the champions.
As mentioned earlier, they had a lot of injuries this season including an injury to star midfielder Iker Guarrotxena. The Spaniard shared a heartfelt video message through Mumbai City FC’s social media handles after receiving his ISL winner’s medal.
The midfielder began by thanking everyone involved at the club for how they treated him during his time in the city.
“Hi everyone involved in Mumbai City, in the club. I just want to say thank you for how you make me feel during this period in the city, in the club with all of you,” he asserted.
He went on to say that winning the ISL trophy with Mumbai City FC is a big achievement for him and he will keep his winner’s medal in an important part of his house.
“To be part of this big achievement for me means a lot actually, because when I went there, I went with one target and I think the club got it. So yes, the big medal is here. Now I will keep it in an important part of my home,” he said.
“I just want to say thank you once again. I hope to see you soon and get more trophies together. Thank you,” he concluded.
Iker Guarrotxena’s performances
The midfielder signed a deal with the Islanders on deadline day of the winter transfer window following the departure of multiple key players. Guarrotxena was an instant hit at Mumbai City FC as he scored three goals and created two assists in just six games. However, his season was cut short following a knee injury and he couldn’t contribute further for the defending champions.
