Mumbai City vs Chennaiyin FC: All time head-to-head record

Mumbai City hold a big advantage over Chennaiyin FC when it comes to the head-to-head record
The Indian Super League 2025-26 season is underway with the two Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal leading the way on top of the points table. With playoffs not in the picture this season, only the top spot will pay dividends as nothing else will give you a chance to win silverware.
Mumbai City hosted Chennaiyin FC at the Mumbai Football Arena (MFA) on Thursday to open their ISL 2025-26 campaign in a fixture that they have dominated in recent times. Petr Kratky’s side beat CFC twice last season, including a 4-0 hammering in the 2025 Super Cup back in April.
Mumbai City vs Chennaiyin FC: Two sides of a coin
2014-2020

Chennaiyin FC, alongside ATK, were the team to beat in ISL between 2014 and 2020. The Marina Machans made it to three finals, winning the ISL Cup twice in the first six seasons. In their first 13 encounters against the Islanders, CFC dominated with seven wins and set the pace in this rivalry.
However, post the 2019-2020 season, Chennaiyin Football Club crumbled; the team looks to have lost its identity and fighting spirit, becoming a shell of its former self. On the other hand, Mumbai City FC received a big boost as City Football Group took over the club in November 2019, bringing a winning formula to the club.
2021-2025

In the 2020-21 season, backed by their new owners, MCFC struck gold, winning the ISL Shield and the ISL title. They followed their winning streak by adding another ISL Shield in the 2022-23 season and the ISL Cup in the 2023-24 season, forming a duopoly on the prized silverware alongside Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
Following their 1-0 loss to Chennaiyin FC on 21st February 2020, Mumbai City have never bowed to the Southern Blues again. Since then, the Islanders have remained unbeaten in 14 encounters, picking up 12 wins, in what has been a one-sided annihilation.
What’s next?
Going into the 2025-26 ISL campaign, the wind seems to be blowing in a different direction. City Football Group has left Mumbai City amidst the ongoing uncertainty in Indian football. Chennaiyin FC on the other hand are building up brick-by-brick under the former Mumbai City assistant coach Clifford Miranda, who is now the CFC head coach.
Given the stories leading up to this game on Thursday, it seems to be the perfect time for Chennaiyin FC to break the jinx. Will the Islanders hold on to their dominant streak? Only time will tell.
