ISL: Odisha FC sign midfielder Lalrinfela Khiangte on long term deal

Lalrinfela Khiangte joins Juggernauts from Mohammedan SC.
Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Odisha FC have announced the signing of promising midfielder Lalrinfela Khiangte on a three-year contract, running until 2028, with an option to extend it by an additional year. Widely known as Mafela, the 25-year-old playmaker from Mizoram joins the Juggernauts after an impressive I-League campaign and a brief stint in the Indian Super League (ISL) with Mohammedan SC.
A look at Lalrinfela Khiangte’s career
Lalrinfela Khiangte’s footballing journey began in 2015 when he earned a spot at the prestigious Mohun Bagan Football Academy through open trials. Eager to further refine his skills, he later moved to Bengaluru FC’s youth system in 2017, playing for both the U18 side and the reserves.
During this period, he also represented Mizoram at the Santosh Trophy Qualifiers in 2021 and participated in youth tournaments like the Subroto Cup and B.C. Roy Trophy.
Lalrinfela Khiangte’s senior breakthrough came at Aizawl FC, where he signed a two-year professional contract in 2022 and wore the No. 10 jersey. Mafela made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against TRAU and picking up the Hero of the Match award. In the 2023–24 I-League season, he emerged as one of the club’s most reliable performers, featuring in 21 of 22 matches, scoring two goals, and providing a team-high four assists, all while battling through injuries and a packed schedule.
In June 2024, Lalrinfela Khiangte took the next step by signing a three-year contract with Mohammedan SC, marking his ISL debut against FC Goa in September. Despite limited minutes, he impressed with his 90% passing accuracy and composed play in midfield. However, in March 2025, Mafela terminated his contract with Mohammedan by mutual consent, citing just cause, paving the way for a new opportunity.
Now, as he joins Odisha FC, the club believes Mafela’s energy, playmaking skills, and work ethic will significantly bolster their midfield. His arrival comes at a crucial time as the club looks to build a core of Indian talent capable of competing at the highest level.
