Robson Robinho’s absence impacted the Mariners at Kanteerava

Mohun Bagan SG dropped points for the first time in the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, playing out a 0-0 draw against Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, on Saturday (14 March, 2026). Despite creating major chances, the Mariners lacked that finishing touch and were forced to accept one point from the clash.

After the game, Sergio Lobera rued missed chances for his side that resulted in the draw.

He stated, “It was a difficult game; we competed against a very good team. At times, we suffered, but the team showed strong personality in this game.

“We created a lot of chances to win the game, and my feeling is that we lost two points more than winning one point. In the last part of the game, we deserved to score at least one goal and get three points. I’m happy with the performance of the team, but we need to learn about some things to improve and focus on the next game,” he also added.

“The referees do a really good job, but they need to work towards improving” : Sergio Lobera

Sergio Lobera was also a bit frustrated with the refereeing in the match, especially after he was given a booking.

He stated: “There are no situations where the refereeing might’ve made a difference. But the referees need to show the same amount of respect that I’m showing them. This yellow card, which they gave, I’m not sure what it was about. The referees do a really good job, but they need to work towards improving.”

Bengaluru FC draw on title race and midfielders dominating match

When asked if this draw could impact Mohun Bagan in the title race.

The Spaniard explained: “As always, I’ve told you that this is a short season and the margin for making mistakes is less. To get one point today is something I’m not happy about, as I want to win every game.”

“As a professional, I need to be happy with my players because against a good team, they competed very well. The players did a great job in reading the game in difficult phases, we had chances and if we had scored one clear-cut chances we’d have spoken in a different way in terms of the result,” he further quipped.

Sergio Lobera was pleased with how his side dominated possession and controlled the midfield battle.

As he stated, “I’m happy because it wasn’t easy. We played against a good opponent and they need to work on, some things that need to be solved.

“This was the most difficult game we’ve played till now, so I’m happy. We are showing a known style of play and that is important. When the result is 0-0, you might look to score quickly and might lose the team idea. We played within our style of play and looked to win the game,” he also stated.

Strategy for next games and substitutions

When questioned about what his strategy will be for the next match against Mumbai City.

Sergio Lobera claimed: “Every game is a difficult game, even though we might be favourites for some. To use an example, in Bengaluru FC’s last game against Mohammedan, they scored a goal against Gurpreet, and today the keeper was amazing against us.

“Every opponent can generate complications for us, and we need to be humble, and our target is to win every game. Every match is difficult, and we need to work 100% and get the important points,” he further stated.

Speaking about his substitutions in the match.

Lobera stated: “I have an amazing squad with players on the bench having the same level of thos who are starting. As a coach, we need to look to score with the players that are on the pitch. I don’t want to make too many changes at this moment, but I need to analyse what errors I made during the game, and maybe I can improve as a coach as well.”

Robson Robinho’s absnce impact

Finally, when asked about Robson Robinho’s injury forcing him to miss the match and his replacements at hand.

Lobera stated: “We cannot be overconfident because Jamshedpur play tomorrow. We will have a difficult season, and the margin for mistakes is very small. We missed Robson, who is important for us, but I didn’t miss him that much, as we have very good players.

“Maybe all coaches in the league would want to play the strongest players they have. When you have injuries like Robson, an advantage is that when other teams have major injuries, the advantage I have is to replace him with a player of the same quality because of my squad,” he finished with.
