With three titles, Gokulam Kerala FC are the most successful club in league history.

The Indian Women’s League (IWL) is the apex club competition for women footballers in India. Established in 2016, the league’s format varied over recent seasons, with some seasons witnessing participation of 12 teams.

But since switching to a seven-team format for the 2023-2024 season, the competition has become the playground for the best women’s football teams to battle it out for the title.

Built on the foundations established by the Indian national women’s team’s performance in the SAFF Women’s Championships, the league has garnered support over the years.

While there have been multiple teams over the years, that competed for the prestigious title, only a select few teams have been able to call themselves ‘champions’.

Only five clubs have won the prestigious league title since it began in 2016. Gokulam Kerala FC has been the most successful club in the tournament, having won the competition three times. Following them, there is a four-way tie for the second most successful club in the competition.

Eastern Sporting Union, Rising Students Club, Sethu FC, and Odisha Women FC have each won the competition once.

The most recent edition of the IWL during the 2023-2024 season witnessed Odisha Women FC needing a win over Kickstart FC to capture their first IWL title. The main challengers to Odisha Women FC were Gokulam Kerala FC, who were only two points behind the leaders with a superior goal difference.

A draw against Kickstart would have taken things out of Odisha’s hands, in terms of winning the league title. But the club put on a dominating 6-0 performance against Kickstart FC to capture the title on the final day of the season.

While it was a disappointing end to the campaign for Gokulam Kerala FC, the club will be again looking to fight for a title in the upcoming season. The 3-time champions have shown their class in the last five seasons and will be perennial favorites once again ahead of the 2024-2025 season.
