Mohun Bagan Super Giant will lock horns with cross-city rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club in their Durand Cup 2025 opener at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on August 1st, 2025. The match is also the first for the Mariners in their 2025/26 club football campaign.

Mohammedan succumbed to a 1-2 loss to Diamond Harbour FC in their Durand Cup opening game at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on 28th July, 2025 and will be itching to put some points in their bag. A loss to Bagan will put them on the brink of an early exit from the competition.

Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, will be looking for a solid start to their campaign after doing the Indian Super League (ISL) double in the previous season.

Contrasting fortunes for both clubs

While both teams have dominated the Kolkata football scene for a century, their performances on the national stage have been rather contrasting in recent years.

Mohammedan SC, won the I-League in the 2023/24 season to qualify for the Indian Super League (ISL) but finished last in the table, picking up just thirteen points.

They have won the Durand Cup on two occasions, once in 1940 and again after 83 years, in 2013. Their 2-1 victory over Royal Warwickshire Regt. in 1940 was the first time that an Indian club had won the Durand Cup, after 62 years of the tournament.

It was the first time that the tournament had been played in Delhi, after being moved from Shimla, and it was a moment of great pride for their fans.

After a disastrous ISL season, the Black Panthers will want to get their hands on a trophy at any cost. It is, however, the seventeen-time record champions that stand in their way.

Mohun Bagan have been one of the most consistent teams in the Indian footballing circuit since their move to the ISL from the I-League in 2020. They have qualified for the playoffs every year and lifted the ISL double in the previous season.

They won the trophy in 2023 and reached the final last year, losing out to NorthEast United FC despite having taken a 2-0 lead in the game. Jose Molina’s team will be looking to make amends and add an eighteenth crown to their Durand Cup trophy list.

The Group B Kolkata derby in the Durand Cup 2025 between the Mariners and the Panthers kicks off at 7:00 PM IST on 1st August, 2025. It will be played at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata.
