India are the defending champions of the SAFF U17 Championship 2025.

The SAFF U17 Championship 2025 commenced on Monday with the hosts Sri Lanka taking on Nepal in the curtain raiser of the tournament. The subcontinental showpiece will serve as the perfect platform for the teams to prepare for the upcoming AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

Seven teams are participating in the competition, including the hosts Sri Lanka, the defending champions India, the last edition’s runners-up Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, and Nepal. The Blue Colts will be approaching the tournament with a clear ambition to defend the title.

Fight for subcontinental supremacy

The SAFF U17 Championship has always been a barometer to judge the progression of the subcontinental football, with the next generation stars participating in the tournament. This edition will be no different as the potential superstars of the game will be on display.

Seven teams have been divided into two groups. Group A has the hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Whereas group B is graced by India, Pakistan, Maldives, and Bhutan. Each team will play against each other, and the top two teams from each group at the end of the group stage will qualify for the semi-finals.

India will begin their campaign against Maldives on September 16. This fixture will be followed by a clash against Bhutan on September 19. The Blue Colts will conclude their group stage with the encounter against the arch-rivals Pakistan on September 22.

Bibiano Fernandes is back at the helm for the Indian U17 team. The experienced coach has a great record with the U17 team in the past, and his return will boost India’s chances not just in the SAFF U17 Championship but AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers as well.

The SAFF U17 Championship 2025 will be streamed live on Sportzworkz YouTube channel. The Blue Colts will be playing their first and third match at 3:00 PM IST, while their second match will kick off at 7:30 pm IST.
