The other semi-final will take place tomorrow.
A packed EMS Corporation Stadium in Calicut was the electrifying scene for the much-anticipated first semi-final of the Super League Kerala, where local favorites Calicut FC faced off against Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC. Fans from both sides filled the stands, their passionate cheers fueling the intensity of the match.
The first half began with a clear statement from Kombans, who kicked off the game at a high tempo, eager to secure an early lead. They showed determination in their attacks, pressing Calicut FC’s defense in the opening minutes. However, Calicut FC, under the guidance of Ian Andrew Gillan, soon found their rhythm and began to counter Kombans’ momentum.
The 11th minute saw Calicut FC’s first dangerous opportunity, as Gani Ahmed’s curling free-kick posed a serious threat to Kombans’ defense, putting them on high alert. Calicut’s attacking trio, Ernest Barfo, Belfort, and U-23 standout Riyas, continued to increase the pressure on Kombans, creating numerous chances and testing their resilience.
Despite Calicut’s offensive efforts, Kombans captain Patrick Motta worked tirelessly in the midfield, orchestrating play and attempting to regain control for his team. His efforts paid off when Kombans capitalized on a crucial error in Calicut’s box. Defender Richard Agyeman fouled a Kombans striker, handling the ball inside the box, leading the referee to award a penalty. Kombans’ Autemar Bispo made no mistake, expertly converting from the spot and giving his team a crucial 1-0 lead.
Galvanized by the setback, Calicut FC wasted no time in launching an immediate counterattack, with a well-struck shot aimed at the Kombans’ goal. However, goalkeeper Michel Americo was at his best, delivering a series of incredible saves to protect Kombans’ lead, which held firm until the halftime whistle.
Calicut FC entered the second half determined to overturn the scoreline. The home team faced an early setback when defender Hakku was injured and had to be substituted. However, this did not diminish their resolve, as they continued pressing forward with relentless energy.
Calicut’s breakthrough came in the 60th minute when substitute striker Kennedy found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd. The equalizer fueled Calicut’s momentum, and they took control of the game, preventing Kombans from advancing into their half.
In the 72nd minute, Kennedy nearly doubled his tally with a powerful shot that struck the crossbar. The rebound fell perfectly to Gani Ahmed, who seized the opportunity with a thunderous strike, sending the ball past Kombans’ goalkeeper Michel Americo and sealing Calicut FC’s 2-1 victory.
Despite their spirited performance, Kombans could not break through Calicut’s resilient defense to find an equalizer. The final whistle confirmed Calicut FC’s hard-fought triumph and advancement to the Super League Kerala final, with fans celebrating their team’s tenacity and skill.
Calicut FC now looks forward to the ultimate showdown in the Super League Kerala final, where they’ll compete for the championship title.
