Alexis Sosa scored the solitary goal for Calicut.

Calicut FC prevailed over the Thiruvananthapuram Kombans at the EMS Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode, in a nail-biting 1-0 match on the first matchday of the Round 5 fixtures in the Super League Kerala.

Calicut FC got off to a dominating start as they broke the deadlock in the 12th minute off Sosa, following a confusion in the Kombans’ box. Later, Calicut kept their attacking intent high and played with purpose, but somewhere down the line it felt like their scoring boots were missing after getting the lead.

In the second half, though Kombans came out with vigour to attack and find the equaliser, the acrobatic saves of Hajmal prevented them from doing so, and the match ended 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

Calicut started off brightly at home, controlling the ball brilliantly and initiating some early attacks to punish the shaky Kombans’ defence. In the 11th minute, Calicut created the first real chance of the game following a clumsy situation in the six-yard box, but to the fortune of the Kombans, they somehow evaded the danger by conceding a corner.

The sigh of relief did not last long as Prashant deployed the corner into the middle of the box, which hit the Kombans defender, Iury De Carvalho, who failed to adjust his legs. The ball deflected straight to the back of Sosa and found the back of the net, leaving the keeper Aaryan just a spectator between the crowd. Later, Prashant kept attacking from the wings, but was disappointing in the final third as he lacked decision-making.

In the 25th minute, Ajsal excellently flicked the ball to provide the ball to Boasso, who missed a 1v1 situation with the keeper and a golden opportunity to double their advantage. Minutes later, Prashant took a bullet shot at the goal, but Aaryan stretched well and denied the attempt, and at the stroke of half-time, the score was 1-0 in favour of the home side.

Calicut seal the deal

In the initial minutes of the second half, it was all Kombans as they aggressively attacked to find the equaliser and managed to keep the hosts relatively silent. Calicut FC failed to build on the momentum and displayed just an average performance.

However, despite the domination of Kombans, they were unable to register a goal against their name as the Calicut keeper Hajmal was alert throughout the 90 minutes and was worth every penny. The keeper, with his reflex, kept the Kombans paralysed and denied all their attempts to bring the score back on level terms and share the spoils.

Kombans remain in the fifth position, vulnerable to elimination and Calicut, on the other hand, climb to the 3rd position with 8 points, just behind Kannur Warriors on goal difference.
