Top four players who returned to Indian football team for March international break 2025

Sunil Chhetri is back with the Indian Football Team for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
Ahead of their two games in March against Maldives and Bangladesh, the Indian football team under coach Manolo Marquez has welcomed some big names. The Spaniard continues to search for his first win since taking over in July 2024 as the national team head coach.
While the game on 19th March against Maldives is an international friendly, it will be an excellent opportunity for the Blue Pilgrims to assess some old names returning to the national fold. However, after that, the Blue Tigers have an important run of games beginning with their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Bangladesh on 25th March.
Searching for their first win in over a year, the Blue Tigers need to win their group to make it to the tournament scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia. Following the game against the Bengal Tigers, India will also play Hong Kong and Singapore, who have been drawn in Group C.
Here are the four old faces who are coming back to the Indian Football Team after their brief hiatus:
4. Subhasish Bose
A consistent performer for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Bose has been one of the standout Indian players in the Indian Super League (ISL) this season. Primarily a left-back, Bose has also shown versatility with his attacking contributions, scoring six goals and providing one assist in 22 appearances. His aerial ability and defensive solidity make him a crucial asset for the Indian backline, and his return will be a massive boost for Marquez.
His experience and leadership will be invaluable for the national team, especially in high-stakes encounters like the upcoming AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers 2027. His set-piece threat and ability to play both in defence and high on the wings adds depth to the squad as the Indian Football Team seeks a winning start against Bangladesh.
3. Naorem Mahesh Singh

One of the most consistent performers in Indian football, Naorem Mahesh Singh, has earned his comeback to the national squad with a string of strong performances for East Bengal FC. His ability to take on defenders, create chances, and deliver dangerous crosses makes him an excellent addition to India’s attack.
Mahesh’s recent form has seen him score two goals and provide an assist in his last seven ISL games, which has caught the attention of the Indian Football Team coaching staff. His inclusion will give India an added attacking dimension, as he can operate effectively on the wings or in a more advanced playmaking role. Mahesh could be a game-changing addition to the Blue Tigers, given his technical ability and intangibles.
2. Ashique Kuruniyan
A tricky winger with excellent dribbling skills, Kuruniyan’s return to the national team adds a dynamic edge to India’s attacking play. Known for his speed, agility, and ability to deliver dangerous crosses, the 27-year-old has been impactful as a substitute for Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Though his goal contributions have not been as high as some of his teammates, his ability to beat defenders and provide service makes him a vital asset.
Kuruniyan’s presence on the flanks will be key for Indian Football Team, as he can stretch defences and create space for Sunil Chhetri and Manvir Singh in the attacking third. His chemistry with his national teammates will be crucial in breaking down compact defences like Bangladesh’s in the upcoming qualifiers.
1. Sunil Chhetri
Indian Football Team’s captain, leader, and all-time top scorer, Sunil Chhetri, returns to the national squad in top form. At 40 years old, Chhetri defies expectations, finishing as the highest Indian goal-scorer in the ISL this season with 12 goals and two assists in 23 appearances. His experience, composure in front of goal, and leadership qualities make him a considerable returning player for the Blue Tigers.
As the Indian Football Team faces Bangladesh in a crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier, Chhetri’s ability to rise to the occasion will be vital. He has been the go-to player for the national team in high-pressure situations, and his presence alone will provide a morale boost to the squad.
