Thailand have an upper hand on the head-to-head record against India.

India will be getting back to competitive action on June 4 (2025), when they face off against a challenging Thailand side in an international friendly game. For both teams, this will serve as a solid warm-up match ahead of their next AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier game in June.

The Blue Tigers are heading into this upcoming clash at the back of a frustrating goalless draw against Bangladesh, which kicked off their Asian Cup qualifiers campaign. They will look to regain some of their winning momentum by defeating the War Elephants in their own yard and raise their confidence levels for the game against Hong Kong.

Blue Tigers have actually faced off against Thailand on quite a few occasions in the past. They have resulted in some dramatic, eventful clashes between the two sides and produced some nice memories for both sets of fans.

Historic and recent matches between India and Thailand

The first-ever match between Blue Tigers and Thailand in competitive football actually took place in the 1962 Asian Games, where the Blue Tigers claimed the Gold Medal under the guidance of legendary coach, Syed Abdul Rahim. India faced Thailand in their second group stage game, coming off a loss to South Korea in the opener.

However, Rahim’s side produced some extremely clinical football to trounce the War Elephants. PK Banerjee, Tulsidas Balaram, and Chuni Goswami all scored to get a 4-1 win over Thailand. India also won their second ever game against Thailand, defeating them in the 1964 Merdeka Tournament.

Thailand’s first-ever win over the Blue Tigers came in the 1968 Merdeka Tournament, where they came away with a 1-0 win. Thailand and India also met in the 1970 Asian Games, playing out a thrilling 2-2 draw. However, Thailand’s biggest wins over India came in the 1976 Merdeka Tournament, where they got a 6-2 win – before trouncing the Blue Tigers by a 4-0 margin in the 1977 President’s Cup.

The Blue Tigers, however, have come out on top in their recent meetings Thailand. India produced a really clinical performance in the group stages of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, defeating the War Elephants by a 4-1 margin. India also defeated Thailand by a 1-0 margin in the 2019 King’s Cup, which was their first-ever win under Igor Stimac.

India vs Thailand – all-time head-to-head record

The head-to-head record between these two national teams across their respective history have been dominated by Thailand. Despite losing their first two international matches against India, they have recovered strongly to get many wins over the last five decades.

However, quite a few draws have also been played out between the two sides. Currently, Thailand are ranked at the 99th place in the FIFA World Rankings, while India are in the 127th position. Including all the friendlies and competitive games between the two nations, here is the overall head-to-head record:

  • Total number of matches played – 25

  • Matches that ended in a draw – 7

How important is the match against Thailand?

India are heading into the game against Thailand with a lengthy national camp behind them, meaning the players should have had enough time to properly learn Manolo Marquez’s style and improve their chemistry.

However, they will be gunning for a win to improve their confidence levels and momentum heading into the Hong Kong clash. The Blue Tigers will aim to prove that they can sustain themselves against teams ranked higher than them and can also defeat challenging opposition away from home.

The last time India won an away game was way back in 2023 against Kuwait (November 16). They will want to play to their utmost best to get their third straight win over Thailand in competitive matches and march onto the Hong Kong match soaring high on confidence.
