Zimbabwe emerge as fourth team for Unity Cup featuring India, Nigeria and Jamaica

India will compete in the Unity Cup for the first time ever.

Zimbabwe national football team are expected to complete the four-team lineup for the Unity Cup in London, where India will compete later this May. The tournament is scheduled from May 26 to May 30 and will follow a knockout format.

For Indian Football Team, these matches come at the right time. The team has had limited game time in recent international windows, so this tournament offers a chance to build consistency and test combinations against stronger sides.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed the participation of the country in the four-nation tournament. Khalid Jamil’s team head into the tournament after securing a 2-1 victory over Hong Kong in Kochi during the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.

Ryan Williams made an instant impact by scoring within the opening four minutes on his debut, while Akash Mishra added another to seal the result. The win ended a seven-match run without a regulation-time victory and gave the side a much-needed lift following their exits from both World Cup and Asian Cup qualification campaigns.

Tough opponents and recent form

India will face Nigeria national football team who are ranked 21 in the world and 71st ranked Jamaica national football team, with Zimbabwe likely joining after their recent success in a Four Nations competition. Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago participated in the previous edition, while the original tournament in 2004 included the Republic of Ireland.

India’s inclusion this year marks their first appearance and aligns with the large fan base in the UK. The team last toured England in 2000, when Bhaichung Bhutia led the side in matches against Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, and Bangladesh.

The Blue Tigers went down 0-2 to Fulham, then played out a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion, before finishing the tour with a 1-0 win over Bangladesh in Leicester.

Zimbabwe head into the tournament after winning that event, ending a long gap without a trophy. As a result, they arrive with confidence and momentum. Both Nigeria and Jamaica fell short in their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaigns.

India also come in with a positive result. They beat Hong Kong national football team 2-1 in their last match. Ryan Williams scored on debut, and the team showed more intent in attack.

However, the step up in quality will be clear. Nigeria and Jamaica bring pace, strength, and experience, which will test India across all areas of the pitch.

What is the Unity Cup?

The Unity Cup is an international tournament held in London, featuring teams with strong diaspora links to the United Kingdom. It began in 2002 and has recently returned after a long break.

The structure is straightforward. Two semifinals are played first, followed by a final and a third-place match. Each team plays at least two games within a few days.

Nigeria have dominated past editions, while this will be India’s first appearance in the competition.

India rise in FIFA rankings

AFC Asian Cup 2026: Updated points table after India vs Hong Kong

India have climbed to 136th in the latest rankings released by FIFA. The win over Hong Kong added crucial points and helped the team move up five places.

At the same time, results elsewhere worked in India’s favour, improving their position in Asia as well, climbing up to the 25th spot from 28th.

The Unity Cup now gives India a chance to build on this progress. Matches against higher-ranked teams like Nigeria and Jamaica will help the squad improve and prepare for upcoming competitions later in the year.
